1975년 존스홉킨스대학교에서 박사학위를 받았다. 학위 논문은 프랑스의 도시 계획에 관한 것으로 이후 발전되어 『The French New Towns』라는 제목으로 출판되었다. 1976년 이후 마이애미대학교의 지리학과 교수로 재직 중이다. 도시지리학과 인문지리학을 가르치고 교과서를 집필하는 것 외에 Rubenstein 박사는 자동차산업에 대한 연구를 수행하면서 『The Changing U.S. Auto Industry: A Geographical Analysis』, 『Making and Selling Cars: Innovation and Change in the U.S. Auto Industry』, 『Who Really Made Your Car? Restructuring and Geographical Change in the Auto Industry』(Thomas Klier와 공저) 세 권의 책을 출판하였다. 볼티모어에서 태어나 오리올스 야구팀의 열렬한 팬이며 애완견 윈스터와 산책하는 것을 즐긴다.
