뉴욕시립대학교 대학원센터 교수다. 모스크바에서 태어나 미술, 건축, 컴퓨터과학을 공부했다. 1981년 뉴욕으로 가 1988년 NYU에서 인지과학으로 석사학위를, 1993년 로체스터 대학에서 시각과 문화 연구로 박사학위를 받았다. 1984년부터 컴퓨터 미디어 분야에서 애니메이터, 디자이너, 프로그래머로 활동했으며 디지털 필름 <작은 영화>, 20세기 역사를 항해하는 개념 소프트웨어 “프로이트-리시츠키 내비게이터”, 스트리밍 소설 “안나와 앤디” 등의 예술 프로젝트를 수행했다. 2002∼2003년 구겐하임 펠로십, 칼아츠 멜론 펠로십, 2002년 UC 산타바바라의 디지털 문화 펠로십 등을 수상했다. 지은 책으로 『텍스투라 : 시각문화에 관한 러시아인의 에세이』(1993), 『뉴미디어의 언어』(2001), 『소프트웨어가 명령한다』(2013) 등이 있다.

영문학자, 디지털 문학 연구자, 포스트휴머니즘 이론가. 포스트휴머니즘을 학술 영역에서 최초로 정의하고 본격적 학문 분야로 발전시킨 것으로 널리 인정받는다. 로체스터공과대학교에서 화학으로 학사 학위를 받고 캘리포니아공과대학교에서 화학 석사 학위를 받은 후, 영문학으로 진로를 바꾸어 로체스터대학교에서 영문학으로 박사 학위를 받았다. 융합적 학문 배경과 관심을 바탕으로 과학, 문학, 기술 간의 관계를 다루는 포스트휴먼 이론에 대한 학제적 연구를 폭넓게 수행해 왔다. 듀크대학교 영문학과 교수를 지냈고, 현재는 동 대학교 명예교수로 있다. 디지털 문학을 문학 연구의 대상으로 정립하는 데 크게 기여했으며, 컴퓨터 코드와 인간의 언어가 겹치고 분기하는 방식과 그 상호매개 관계를 이해할 수 있는 통찰을 제시해 왔다. 최근에는 인간 인지와 디지털 매체의 상호 관계를 탐구하며 포스트휴머니즘 연구를 지속적으로 선도하고 있다. 저서로 ≪우리는 어떻게 포스트휴먼이 되었는가(How We Became Posthuman)≫, ≪글 쓰는 기계(Writing Machines)≫, ≪비사고(Unthought)≫ 등이 있다.
