미국의 소설가이자 시인, 극작가. 독일 뮌헨에서 태어난 뒤 국무부에서 일하는 아버지를 따라 필리핀과 일본을 거쳐 미국에 정착했다. 스무 살에 시집을 출간한 뒤 아이오와대학에서 영문학 학사 및 석사 학위를 받았고, 이때 레이먼드 카버의 지도를 받기도 했다. 한때 마약 등을 접하며 방황하는 삶을 살았는데, 이때의 경험들을 바탕 삼아 삶의 어두운 면과 인간 내면의 고통, 구원의 가능성을 탐구하는 작품들을 썼다. 특히 『예수의 아들』을 비롯한 존슨의 최고작들은 절제되어 있으면서도 강렬한 문장으로 현실과 환상을 넘나드는 듯한 분위기를 선보이며, 그 성과는 도스토옙스키, 헤밍웨이, 플래너리 오코너, 레이먼드 카버 등 위대한 거장들이 이룬 업적에 비견되었다. 2017년 간암으로 사망했다.
