미국 스탠퍼드 대학교에서 석사 학위를 받고 토론토 대학교에서 박사 학위를 받았다. 영국 런던 대학교에서 연구했는데 스탠퍼드 대학교의 저명한 수학자 조지 폴리아의 영향을 받았다. 스튜어트는 최근까지 맥마스터 대학교의 수학과 교수로 재직했으며, 연구 분야는 조화해석학이었다. 그는 센게이지러닝을 통해 『PRECALCULUS』, 『CALCULUS』, 『CALCULUS : EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS』, 『CALCULUS : CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS』 등 다양한 미분적분학 교재를 출간한 베스트셀러 저자이다.
