대학에서 국어국문학을 전공하고, 대학원에서 문학박사 학위를 받았다. 교육학에 관한 관심으로 대학원에 재입학하여 교육학을 공부했다. 대학교 재학 중에 인문대학 학생회장에 당선되어 민주화운동에 동참했다. 교사가 된 후 전국교사협의회 청주지구 사무국장으로 참교육 실천에 열정을 쏟았다. 충북보건과학대학교와 충북대학교에서 강사로 일하고, 세광고등학교를 거쳐 현재 세광중학교에서 수석교사로 근무하며 한국청소년상담학회 수련감독, 학습상담학회 이사, 충북교육청 장학지원단 및 국제교육원 다문화교육지원단으로 활동 중이다. 중앙중심 문화·예술이 지역중심 문화·예술로 전환되어야 한다는 신념으로 지역 문화·예술 발전에 관심이 높다. 문학 평론가로 활동하고 있으며 다년간 내륙문학회 사무국장과 회장 및 충북작가회의 편집국장, 이사를 역임했다. 에코(Echo) 색소폰 동호회를 창단하고 교사 색소폰 오케스트라 단원으로 학생들에게 예술적 감수성과 소양을 높이며, 지역 주민에게 곱고 아름다운 선율을 전하고 있다. 최근 자연과 숲, 나무 등 임업에 관심이 많아 산이 살아야 나라가 산다는 생각으로 숲 가꾸기에 골몰하고 있다. 한국학술진흥재단 학술등재지와 등재후보지에 학술논문 20여 편을 상재하였다. 개인 저서로는 『사교육 1번지! 대치동 돼지 엄마의 추억』, 『사이버리즘과 사이버소설』, 『디지털시대의 대중소설론』 등이 있다. 공동 저서로는 『바로 써먹는 수업 기술』, 『과정중심평가로 대학 간다』, 『대중문학의 이해』, 『현대소설의 이해』, 『역사소설이란 무엇인가』, 『과학소설이란 무엇인가』, 『무협소설이란 무엇인가』, 『연애소설이란 무엇인가』 등이 있다.
