옛날엔 통제사가 있었다는 낡은 항구의 처녀들에겐 옛날이 가지 않은 천희라는 이름이 많다
미역오리63 같이 말라서 굴껍질처럼 말없이 사랑하다 죽는다는
이 천희의 하나를 나는 어느 오랜 객주집의 생선 가시가 있는 마루방에서 만났다
저문 유월의 바닷가에선 조개도 울을 저녁 소라방등64이 불그레한 마당에 김냄새 나는 비가 나렸다
Long past, it is said there was a Commander of Naval forces of this old port, its maidens of length were and yet still many are called ‘Chonhee’

백석 시의 심연을 비춰본다면, 그곳에는 상실과 고독의 설움이 울울할 것이다. 물론 어떤 시들에는 유년기 고향의 충만한 풍경, 시인에의 드높은 자존감이 넘쳐난다. 하지만 이 요소들은 훼손된 세계를 떠도는 실향민 혹은 순례자의 근본적 욕망, 바꿔 말해 본원적이며 영원한 ‘고향’으로 회귀하려는 ‘귀향자’의 내면 감각이라 해야 옳다. 시인의 현실적인, 곧 결핍된 고향, 그것과 대비되는 과거와 미래의 충만한 고향을 동시에 가로지르는 독법(讀法)이 필요한 이유다.
Reflecting on the poems of Baek Seok, full of loss, loneliness, and sadness, yet imbued with images of hometown in various works from his youth and filled with pride as a poet. Those factors, in fact, symbolize the basic desires of pilgrims and displaced people while reflecting the sentiment of those who hope to return home. For this reason, we need to establish a proper approach to hometown that can be both lacking and abundant.
