책속에서
전통문화로서의 대중문화는 이란의 전통적인 축제, 음악, 스포츠, 카펫과 같은 전통적인 예술품 등을 포함하는 범주로 고대 페르시아 혹은 그 이후의 왕조에서 시작이 되었지만 여전히 현대 이란사회에서 이란인들에게 향유되고 있는 문화들을 포괄한다.
매스커뮤니케이션으로서의 대중문화는 서구적 관점에서 통상적으로 사용되는 용어로서의 대중문화를 지칭한다. 신문과 방송, 인터넷 등이 포함될 수 있다. 일상생활로서의 대중문화는 다른 국가들과는 차별적인 이란의 특징적인 의식주 문화를 포함한다. 본서에서는 특히 이슬람이 이란인들의 생활 속에 어떠한 형태로 자리잡고 있는지에 중점을 둔다.
이란의 대중문화가 전통과 현재, 그리고 종교와 세속이 공존하는 지금의 형태로 형성된 이유는 크게 두 가지를 들어볼 수 있을 것이다. 먼저, 자신들의 전통과 관습에 대한 이란인들의 자부심이다. 이란인들은 세계 최초의 왕조로 불리는 고대 페르시아 제국(아케메네스 왕조)의 후예라는 점을 자랑스럽게 생각하며, 자신들의 오랜 역사와 언어, 그리고 문화에 대해 상당한 자부심을 가지고 있다. 이러한 자부심이 전통 문화를 현재까지 유지하고 향유하는 원동력이 되었을 것이다. 또 하나의 중요한 원인은 1979년의 이슬람 혁명이다. 70년대까지 주요한 친미 국가 중 하나였던 이란이 현재까지도 미국과 큰 마찰을 빚으며 대립하고 있는 강경한 반미 국가로 전환하게 된 것은 1979년의 이슬람 혁명이 기점이 되었다.
