영국 태생의 미국 고인류학자로서 미국자연사박물관의 명예 큐레이터이다. 마다가스카르, 예멘, 수리남, 베트남 등 다양한 지역에서 영장류학 및 고생물학 관련 현장 작업을 해왔으며, 1998년 Becoming Human으로 미국인류학협회의 ‘윌리엄 화이트 하우얼스상’을 수상했다. 저서로는 Masters of the Planet(2013), A Natural History of Wine(2015), A Natural History of Beer(2019), Understanding Human Evolution(2022), Distilled: A Natural History of Spirits(2022) 외 다수가 있다. 국내에는 『거울 속의 원숭이(The Monkey in the Mirror)』(2006), 『인간되기』(2010), 『맥주의 역사』(공저, 2022)가 번역·출간되었다.
