미국 코네티컷주 하트퍼드에 있는 트리니티 칼리지(Trinity College) 생물학 교수. 생리학과 해부학을 가르치며, 물고기(목이 없는 동물)의 신경생물학과 행동을 연구한다. 특히 사회적 상호작용, 포식자 노출, 기생충 감염, 산소 공급 등 자연환경 요소가 성체 뇌에서 새로운 세포 생성에 미치는 영향을 탐구한다. 이러한 연구는 교내 실험실뿐 아니라 우루과이, 파나마, 트리니다드 토바고, 우간다 등 해외 현장에서도 이루어졌다. 그는 우루과이와 포르투갈에서 이 연구를 수행하기 위해 풀브라이트(Fulbright) 장학금을 받았다.
