영국 포츠머스에 있는 하이버리대학(Highbury College)의 기술학부 응용전자공학과 전 학과장이다. 최근에는 포츠머스대학교(University of Portsmouth)에서 프리랜서로 강의를 병행하였으며, 시티앤드길드협회(Advanced Mathematics with City and Guilds)와 IBO(International Baccalaureate Organization, 국제학력평가기구)의 고급수학 책임 심사위원으로 활동하였다. 또한 엔지니어 연수생을 대상으로 한 교육 전문가로서 45년 이상의 경력을 가지고 있다. John Bird는 공학, 과학, 수학을 주제로 한 약 146권의 도서를 집필하였으며, 이 책들은 전 세계적으로 백만 권의 판매를 기록하였다. 그는 공인 기술사(chartered engineer), 공인 수학자(chartered mathematician), 공인 과학자(chartered scientist)로서 각 전문 교육기관의 펠로우이다. 최근에는 영국 햄프셔 고스포트 HMS 술탄의 DCTT(Defence College of Technical Training, 방위기술전문학교)의 국방 학교 해양공학의 선임 훈련 전문가 자리에서 은퇴하였다.
