오레곤에서 자라 사회연구 뉴스쿨 대학New School for Social Research에서 학사와 석사 학위를 받았으며 프린스턴 대학교에서 영문학 박사 과정을 밟고 있다. 「롤링 스톤 Rolling Stone」 「뉴욕 타임즈 New York Times」 「LIT」 「보스톤 리뷰 Boston Review」 「프레리 슈너Prairie Schooner」 「로스앤젤레스 리뷰 오브 북스 Los Angeles Review of Books」 「컨템퍼러리 리터러처Contemporary Literature」 등에 기사, 에세이, 소설 등을 기고해왔고 『Fire and Forget: Short Stories from the Long War(Da Capo, 2013)』의 편집에도 참여했다.
