연극평론가. 1952년 서울 출생. 동국대학교 연극학부 교수와 한국연극평론가협회 회장 및 한국연극학회 회장 역임. 홍익대학교 미술대학 회화과(학사), 미국 애리조나주립대 연극학과 대학원(M.A.), 이화여자대학교 국문과 대학원(석사, 박사)에서 공부했다. 저서로는 <한국 사실주의 희곡 연구>(1988), <약장수, 신의 아그네스 그리고 마당극: 격변기의 한국연극>(1989), <열린 연극의 미학: 전통극에서 포스트모더니즘까지>(1997), <21세기를 여는 연극: 몸, 퍼포먼스, 해체>(2003), <퍼포먼스 연구와 연극>(2010, 공저), Contemporary Korean eatre: Beyond Tradition and Modernization(2014), <동시대 한국연극의 혼돈과 생성>(2016) 등이 있다.
