[ 저자서문 ]

여기에 수록한 전체 논문들의 주된 과제는 한마디로, 이야기꾼의 개념을 정립하고, 이야기꾼 유형의 기준을 설정하며, 개별 이야기꾼의 개성과 특징을 자세히 드러내 보자는 세 가지 항목으로 요약할 수 있을 것이다. 각 논문들이 대체로 길이가 길어지고 있음은 거의 매 논문마다 위 문제들을 다루고 있기 때문이라 할 수 있다. 개별 논문으로 보면 다소 번다하다고도 할 수 있겠지만, 한편으로 보면 이는 곧 우리의 설화 연구사에서 이 방면에 대한 논의가 깊이 축적되지 못한 결과를 말해주는 것이라고도 할 수 있을 것이다. 여기에서 저자가 전통사회라고 이름을 붙였지만, 명칭 그대로 지난 한 세기 이야기꾼의 종?횡단면을 제대로 포착하려면 얼마나 많은 관련 사례를 모아야 그것이 가능할까 하는 생각을 해본다. 여기에는 방랑 이야기꾼, 직업적 이야기꾼, 토박이 이야기꾼 등 대략 큰 방향에서 자세한 사례들이 더 관찰되고 작은 유형으로 정리됨으로써 어느 정도의 구도가 잡힐 수 있지 않을까 짐작해 본다. 늦은 감이 있지만, 앞으로 이야기꾼에 대한 관심이 그러한 방향으로 더 진전되기를 기대하고 싶다.


소설은 소설가, 노래는 소리꾼, 무가는 무당의 소산이듯, 이야기다운 이야기는 이야기꾼의 소산이다. 이 당연한 사실에 유의하면 이야기꾼의 존재와 역할이 늘 관심거리가 되는 것은 아주 자연스런 일이다. 이러한 중요성을 말해주듯, 그동안 이야기꾼의 존재에 대해서는 제한적으로나마 우리나라의 경우 소설과 야담의 이해를 위한 시각에서 주로 언급되어 왔고, 국외에서도 근대기부터 이미 전문적인 수준에서 산발적으로 이에 대한 관심이 주어져 왔다.
