라온이는 할아버지 이야기를 들으며 에티오피아 역사가 우리나라와 매우 비슷하다는 생각이 들었어요. 우리나라도 국민이 평화를 사랑하고, 다른 나라를 침공하지 않았으면서도 일본의 식민 지배를 받았을 때 끊임없이 독립운동을 했던 아픈 역사를 가졌으니까요.
As Raon listened to his grandfather’s story, he thought about how similar Ethiopia’s history was to Korea’s. Like Ethiopia, Korea, whose people loved peace and never invaded other countries, also had a painful history of constant struggle for independence under Japanese colonial rule.

라온이는 맨발로 일하러 다니는 에티오피아 아이들을 방송에서 본 적이 있었습니다. 그때 아이들 발이 얼마나 아플까 또 얼마나 배고플까 하며 불쌍하게 생각했던 기억이 떠올랐어요. 그런데 그런 발로 마라톤 영웅이 되었다니 정말 대단하다는 생각이 들었고 존경심이 우러났어요.
Raon remembered seeing Ethiopian children walking barefoot to work on TV, and he wondered how much their feet must have hurt and how hungry they must have been. He had felt sorry for them. To think that someone from Ethiopia, who ran barefoot as a child, became a marathon hero, was really amazing and made him feel so much respect for him.

“아베베는 열아홉 살에 군대에 자원 입대해서 에티오피아 하일레 셀라시에 황제의 근위병이 되었어. 그러다 6·25전쟁에 참전했지. 그는 황실 근위대에 근무할 때 하일레 셀라시에 황제가 주최한 군인 체육대회를 계기로 달리기를 시작했어. 전쟁이 끝나고 귀국한 후, 24세가 되던 해에 군인 마라톤 대회에서 우승하면서 마라토너로서의 인생을 살게 되었단다.”
“네? 아베베 비킬라가 6·25전쟁에도 참전했다고요? 우리나라에도 왔었다는 거네요? 그럼 언제 맨발의 영웅이 된 거예요?”
“At 19, Abebe volunteered to join the army and became a guard for Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. Later, he also fought in the Korean War. While serving as a guard, he began running in military sports competitions organized by the emperor. After returning from Korea, at 24, he won a military marathon. That’s how he began his journey as a marathon runner.”
“What? Abebe Bikila fought in the Korean War? That means he came to our country? Then when did he become the barefoot hero?”
