책 소개
한국 전반에 대한 세계인의 이해를 높이고, 한국인에게는 보다 정리된 형태로 자국의 사회상과 문화상을 설명할 수 있도록 도움을 주기 위해 2012년 첫 출간된 <Inside Korea>의 개정판이 11년 만에 새 옷을 입고 다시 나왔다.
『Inside Korea』는 ‘한국은 어떤 나라인가?’에 대한 답이 궁금한 외국인들은 물론 해당 질문에 선뜻 답하기 어려운 한국인들을 위해 기획된 책으로, 미국 센트럴 코네티컷 주립대학교에서 40년 이상 후학 양성에 힘써 오신 김기훈 명예교수의 제안으로 시작해, 지리ㆍ역사ㆍ정치ㆍ경제ㆍ사회ㆍ문화ㆍ종교ㆍ과학기술 등의 각 분야 전문가들이 참여했다. 아울러 분단국가로서의 한국의 특수성을 이해하고, 서양 문화와는 다른 동양 문화의 특성을 알아보기 위해 ‘남북 관계의 이해’와 ‘동서양 문화 비교’라는 특별 기고문을 더하였다.
국제사회에서 한국이 차지하는 위상이 점차 강화되면서 국내외에서 한국 문화, 역사, 여행, 음식 등 특정 분야나 주제에 대한 많은 책들이 발간되고 있다. 하지만 본 책자와 같이 지리, 정치, 경제, 역사, 사회, 종교, 과학기술 등 한국의 전반을 총망라해 체계적으로 정리하고 특히 이를 한글과 영어로 병기한 책자는 찾아보기 어렵다.
초판 발행 후 10년의 시간이 흐른 2022년, 변화하는 대한민국의 모습을 반영하여 새롭게 출간한 이번 완전 개정판이 다양한 국가의 더 많은 독자들에게 유용하게 활용될 수 있기를 기대한다.
A Guide to Korea for People around the World
Inside Korea was first published in 2012 to enhance the world’s understanding of Korea and to help Koreans explain their country’s social and cultural aspects in an even more coherent way. We are very excited to release the revised edition of this book to the public 11 years after its first appearance.
Inside Korea is a book designed for foreigners who are curious about the answer to the question “What is Korea like?” as well as for Koreans who find it difficult to answer that same question. The roots for this book go back to a suggestion from Kim Ki-hoon, a professor emeritus who taught at Central Connecticut State University for more than 40 years, as well as experts in fields such as geography, history, politics, economy, culture, religion, and science, all of whom ended up participating in the project. Also, in order to understand Korea’s distinctiveness of being a divided country—and to find out specifically how the characteristics of Eastern culture and Western culture are different—special contributions, including “Understanding Inter-Korean Relations” and “Comparison of Eastern and Western Culture,” were added.
As Korea’s status in the international community gradually becomes stronger and more influential, many books on specific fields or topics about Korea, whether that is culture, history, travel, or food, are being published in Korea and overseas. However, it is difficult to find a book like this one, as it is organized systematically in the areas of geography, politics, economics, history, society, religion, and science & technology. Of particular note is that it is published both in Korean and English on facing pages.
In 2022, a full 10 years after the first edition was published, we hope that this new, completely revised edition accurately reflects the most important changes that have taken place in Korea over that time, and will prove to be useful for readers in countries around the world.
