서울대학교 언론정보학과 교수로 한국 대중문화 및 미디어 문화에 대해 연구하며, 특히 세계화와 디지털 문화 현상으로서 한류에 대해 집중하고 있다. 서울대학교 불어불문학과를 졸업하고 신문학과에서 석사 및 박사 과정을 수료한 후 프랑스 그르노블대학교에서 언론정보학 박사 학위를 받았다. 방송위원회 선임연구원, 보르도 3대학교 언론정보학과 부교수를 지냈다. 책으로는 《BTS 길 위에서》, 《문화연구의 렌즈로 대중문화를 읽다》(공저), 《세계화와 디지털 문화 시대의 한류》, 《드라마의 모든 것》(공저), 《영상학개론》(공저) 등이 있으며, 텔레비전 드라마, 한류, 디지털 문화, 영상방법론에 대한 다수의 논문이 있다. Professor of Communication at Seoul National University since 2013. She worked at the Korean Broadcasting Commission as a Chief Researcher (1996-1999), and was an Associate Professor at the Department of Information and Communication Sciences at the University of Bordeaux 3 (2000-2013). She is the Director of the Center for Hallyu Studies, Asia Center at Seoul National University since March 2022. Her main research and teaching interests include Cultural Studies, media culture and transnational and global popular culture, as well as visual methods and qualitative research design. She has published books and articles on Korean television dramas, Hallyu as a cultural consequence of globalization and digital culture, and various digital cultural forms and practices such as Mukbang (food broadcasting). She has written columns on Hallyu and cultural issues for national newspapers. Her recent research interests include the impact of global OTT on Hallyu and Korean creative industries, and the political potential of fandom activism.
