미국에서 태어나 자랐음에도 한국말을 유창하게 하는 김예서 양은 2026년 봄 버지니아주 페어팩스 카운티의 센터빌 고등학교를 졸업할 예정이다. 미술뿐 아니라 주장으로 있는 학교 테니스 팀, 토론 팀, 오케스트라, 학생회 간부 활동을 하면서도 최우수 성적을 유지하는 모범생이다. 그림은 바쁜 생활 중 휴식이 필요할 때 많이 그린다는데 여러 상도 받고 작품들이 공항이나 갤러리에 전시되어 있다. 매년 아픈 아동들을 돕기 위한 기금 모금을 위해 손수 그림을 그려 만든 카드들을 팔기도 한다. 대학교에 진학해서 국제관계/정치/경제학을 전공하고 부전공으로 언어학을 공부하기를 원한다. 그리고 장래에는 정책분석이나 법률 관련 일을 하고 싶다고 한다. Claire Y. Kim, a Korean-American student, is set to graduate in the class of 2026 from Centreville High School in Fairfax County, Virginia. Claire serves as the captain of the varsity tennis team, a board member of the debate and speech team and orchestra, and holds various leadership positions in student-led initiatives. Claire’s artwork has received multiple awards and has been exhibited in airports and galleries. Each year, she also sells hand-drawn greeting cards to raise funds for children in need. Looking ahead, Claire plans to double major in linguistics and international relations. She aspires to pursue a career in law, where she hopes to make a meaningful impact through thoughtful, globally minded work. The photo above was taken at the entrance of the apartment complex where the author’s family first lived after immigrating to the United States. The street sign “Skyhill,” which appears in the title of this book, can be seen.
