1951년 경남 마산 출생. 고려대학교 임학과와 대학원에서 산림학을 전공하고, 산림청 임목육종연구소에서 근무한 후 미국 아이오와 주립대학교에서 산림생물학 석·박사학위를 받았다. 현재 국민대학교 산림자원학과 명예교수이자 (재)동숭학술재단 이사장으로 활동하고 있다.‘문화의 창으로 숲을 읽는다’는 일관된 시각으로 1992년부터 본격적인 저술 활동을 시작했다. 그의 저서들은 대한민국 학술원, 환경부, 문화관광부, 한국출판산업진흥원 등 여러 기관에서 우수도서·세종도서로 선정되었으며, 불교출판문화상과 가장 문학적인 학자상을 수상했다. 특히 초·중학교 국어 교과서에 그의 글이 수록되어 대중과 호흡하고 있다. 문화재청 문화재위원회 천연기념물분과 위원장과 제30대 문화재위원장을 역임하였으며, 8년간의 문화재위원 활동을 통해 전국의 천연기념물 은행나무를 직접 살폈다. 저서로 『숲과 한국문화』, 『한국의 사찰 숲』, 『조선의 숲은 왜 사라졌는가』 외 다수가 있다. 특히 이번 신간 『천연기념물 은행나무』는 천연기념물 노거수와 숲을 탐방하며 기록한 『나무와 숲이 있었네』(1999)에서 출발하여, 전국의 천연기념물 소나무를 전수 답사한 『한국의 명품 소나무』(2005)로 이어진 현장 답사의 결정판이다.
