차가 네거리에 다다랐다. 앞의 교통 신호등에 빨간 불이 켜졌다. 차가 섰다. 또 한 번 조수애가 뒤를 돌아보며 물었다.
“어디로 가시죠?”
그러나 머리를 푹 앞으로 수그린 철호는 아무 대답이 없었다. 따르르릉 벨이 울렸다. 긴 자동차의 행렬이 움직이기 시작했다. 철호가 탄 차도 목적지를 모르는 대로 행렬에 끼어서 움직이는 수밖에 없었다. 철호의 입에서 흘러내린 선지피가 흥건히 그의 와이셔츠 가슴을 적시고 있는 것은 아무도 모르는 채 교통 신호등의 파랑 불 밑으로 차는 네거리를 지나갔다.

The car reached an intersection. The traffic signal went red, and the car stopped. The helper looked back once more.
“Where are you going?”
But there was no answer from Ch’?rho, whose head had dropped forward.
The traffic bell clanged and the long line of cars began to move. Knowing no destination but caught in the moving stream, the taxi carrying Ch’?rho likewise had no choice but to move. As it passed under the green traffic signal and moved across the intersection, fresh blood flowing from Ch’?rho’s mouth began a stain unseen on the front of his white shirt.
