긴 인생을 두고 봤을 때 이진수가 군인이었던 것은 잠시뿐이었다. 하지만 인생의 어떤 일은 잠시에 불과할수록 평생 지속된다.
When you considered the whole scope of his life, his time as a soldier had been brief. But sometimes, the shorter a part of one’s life is, the more likely it is to last a lifetime.

“소령님이 멀리서 걸어오시기만 해도 우린 다 쫄았어요.”
이진수가 기분 좋게 웃었다. 그는 권위와 위계를 칭찬으로 여겼다.
“우릴 엄청 팼으니까요. 툭하면 팼어요. 우리더러 악마에 씌었다고 했어요.”
박민오는 키득거렸지만 이진수의 표정은 굳었다. 이진수는 덕분에 좋아졌다는 말을 그제야 알아들었다. 남자는 “그때야 다 그랬지” 하고 짐짓 대수롭지 않게 대꾸했다. 이진수가 남자의 말에 조금 여유를 되찾고 “다 그랬지” 하고 따라 말했다.
“All you had to do was walk toward us from a distance and we’d be shaking in our boots.”
Jinsu smiled happily. For him, wielding authority and outranking others were synonymous with receiving praise.
“We were scared of you because you beat the hell out of us all the time. You’d beat us at the drop of a hat. You said we were possessed by the devil.”
Mino chuckled, but Jinsu’s face hardened. Jinsu understood now what Mino had meant when he said that he’d made their lives better. The other man shrugged it off, saying, “That’s how things were backthen.” Jinsu relaxed a little at his comment and echoed him, saying, “That’s how things were.”

섬뜩한 것은 이진수의 언행을 한 발짝 떨어진 곳에서 보며 미온한 불안감을 느껴온 장소령이 이진수에게 던져진 바로 그 질문에 함께 처하고 있다는 것이다. 출구 없는 세계에서 우리는 결국 똑같은 얼굴을 하고 있다. 편혜영의 소설에서 정말 무서운 것은 그런 것이다.
