내가 뽑은 순전히 개인적인 명반 50선 425

돌이켜 보면 노래도 그 시절이 참 좋았다. 그것은 아마도 그때가 매순간 더 간절했기 때문일 것이다. 감정적으로 더 솔직했던 것일 수도 있다. 그때 만났던 가수와 노래들은 지금도 마음속 깊은 곳에 각인되어 있다. 그것들은 잊어버린 듯 살다가도 문득문득 되살아나는데, 그러면 나는 또 행복해진다. 다행히도 과거는 미화되어 추억이 되는 것이라서 그때는 아팠던 이야기도 이제는 미소 지으며 떠올릴 수 있다. 음악이 없었다면 나는 어떻게 그 위태롭고 막막하던 사춘기와 청춘 시절을 통과할 수 있었을까? 상상할 수 없는 일이다. 음악이 나의 위로였고 힘이었다. _ ‘내 추억의 팝송들’ 중에서

레코드점에 가서 처음 샀던 카세트테이프를 기억한다. 삼성동 영동백화점 앞 골목에 있던, 지금은 이름이 잘 기억나지 않는 작은 레코드가게였다. 거기서 나는 팝송 앨범으로는 처음으로 비틀스의 베스트앨범을 샀다. 비틀스의 소속사 EMI와 국내 라이선스 계약을 맺고 있던 오아시스레코드에서 나온 것이었다.
비틀스는 그때 내가 알던 거의 유일한 팝 가수였다. 순천에서의 중학교 1~2학년 시절, 방학 숙제 중 당시 KBS 제3TV(현 EBS의 전신)로 방송되던 영어회화 프로그램을 보고 매일 관련 내용을 정리하는 것이 있었다. 그 강좌 중에 팝송으로 영어를 배우는 코너가 있었는데, 그때 배웠던 노래가 바로 비틀스의 ‘Yesterday’였다. 그것이 내가 알게 된 최초의 팝송이다. _ ‘Let ib be’ 중에서

고등학교 1학년 때의 기억이다. 수업은 재미없고 무섭기만 해서 인기가 없던 수학 선생님이 있었다. 그런데 어느 날인가 이 선생님이 도대체 안 어울리게도 자기가 고등학교 시절 짝사랑하던 여학생 이야기를 해주었다. 이야기인즉슨 옆집이 목욕탕을 했는데, 그 집 딸을 자신이 오래도록 짝사랑했다는 것이다. 그러면서 이 선생님은 정말 더 안 어울리게도 팝송 한 소절을 살짝 부르기까지 했는데, 그 노래가 바로 였다. 그날 이후 나는 수학 선생님을 조금은 좋아하게 되었다.
끝으로 재미있는 여담 하나. 스모키는 원래 이름이 Smokie가 아니라 Smokey였다. 하지만 소울 스타이던 스모키 로빈슨Smokey Robinson으로부터 소송을 당해 이름을 Smokie로 바꾸어야만 했다. _ ‘Living next door to Alice’ 중에서
