Instruction
1. Read the cartoon “°The Tiger Prawn Farm”± together. Assist students with any difficult vocabulary or concepts.
2. Ask questions that assist the students in understanding the cartoon; sample questions and answers are provided below. Have the students show you the picture that relates to your question.
1) Where are mangrove swamps located? What are the characteristics of mangrove forests?
- They are located between the land and the coast. They protect coastal villages from wind and waves, and it is a safe place for small fish. (See pictures 1, 2, and 3.)
2) How had the people in the coastal villages lived before the mangrove swamps were destroyed?
- They lived a simple life working the land. They also gathered a lot of fish from the coast, probably including tiger prawns. (See pictures 3 and 4.)…

When Pemba was seven years old, an uncle took her by the hand and led her to a house in Kathmandu where she became a domestic servant. After he left, she never saw that uncle again. For nearly seven years she has been working as a maid in her employer’s house doing laundry and cleaning every day. Now, Pemba is thirteen years old. Occasionally, she asks her employer about her mother, father, brothers and sisters.

He always says that her parents died and that she does not have any brothers or sisters. Pemba has never received any pay for her work and she is often beaten by her employer and his family. She is also blamed for any lost items in the house.
If someone gives her a present, the employer’s family accuses her of having bought it with stolen money. Occasionally, a man she does not know comes to the house and touches her body, but her employer never takes any action to stop the man from doing this. Pemba cries and shakes with fear whenever she is touched by this man.
