세종은 작은 연못에 비치는 은빛 달을 감상하고자 밖으로 나섰다. 그런데 수면에 비친 것은 환한 달빛이 아니라 좌절에 빠진 본인의 얼굴이었다. 마치 걸작을 완성하기까지 남은 마지막 한 걸음을 떼지 못하고 좌절해 버린 예술가의 얼굴처럼 보이기도 했다.
왕은 팔을 뻗어 물 위에 조그만 원을 그렸다. 수면에 떠 있던 그의 얼굴 위로 달과 별이 춤추듯 움직였다. 달과 별이 아주 어릴 적부터 꾸었던 어떤 꿈처럼 서서히 흩어진다.
부드럽게 나부끼는 초록빛 잎사귀들…….
Sejong had gone outside to stare at the reflection of the sliver of moon in a small pool of water built just for just that purpose. His own face stared back at him in frustration. Like an artist who could not figure out the one last step to the masterpiece he was painting. He reached out and moved his hand around in the water, tracing a circle ? sending the moon and stars into a kind of dance across the reflection of his face. Then moon and stars and face dissolved into the same dream image that had both haunted and comforted him since before he had learned to walk: the gently falling green leaves....

황잔이 눈살을 찌푸렸다. 그는 이번에는 손님들의 모국어인 조선말로 즉흥시 한 구절을 더 읊었다.
“주인을 찾는 여행자들이여, 그대들은 비난(taunting)을 하러 온 것인가
아니면 구걸(wanting)을 하러 온 것인가?”
매두는 짜증 난 표정으로 평화를 돌아보았다. 하지만 평화는 저 중국인 학자의 별난 말장난을 알아채고 있었다.
“나는 감(hunch)을 잡았네. 곧 점심(lunch)을 먹으리라는 것을.”
평화의 말에 유배자가 빙긋 웃었다

Exile Zan frowned at this. Shifted to his guests’ native tongue, improvising a couplet in perfect Korean. “Travelers who to their host / Are taunting / Will go wanting.” Maedu gave Pyonghwa a look of annoyance. But his partner had just caught onto the Chinese scholar’s eccen-tric rhyming game. “I have a hunch,” proffered Pyonghwa, “There will be lunch.” The Exile smiled.
