The 2010 Ewha Photo Diary, titled Korean Metal Ornaments, features items ranging in date from the Proto-Three Kingdoms period (108 BCE-57 BCE) to the end of the 19th century, which have been selected for the historical and artistic significance of their beauty and usage which makes them works of art. They range from artifacts used to decorate human beings or their surrounding environment to decoration on metal items and can be divided into ornamental artifacts that symbolize wealth and express wishes for eternal life, and personal ornaments used both in everyday life and on special occasions.
Ornamental artifacts include gold crown ornaments used by the king and queen, gold hairpins, a pair of gilt-bronze shoes, gold earrings, and a lavishly decorated gilt-bronze sutra case. Personal ornaments used in everyday life include a pair of gilt-bronze scissors engraved with a cloud design, a gilt-bronze mirror decorated with various designs, serving both ritual and practical purposes, hat ornaments made of gold, silver, jade, or amber which were worn by the upper class, hair ornaments decorated with dragons and phoenixes which were worn by the women of the royal family, and a range of hairpins worn by women of the common class.
These craftworks give us some insight into the efforts of past Koreans to make items that expressed a restrained and simple beauty and were practical at the same time.
