전 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원 HK교수. 서울대학교 및 동 대학원을 졸업했다. 주요 논저로는 《대원군집권기 부국강병정책 연구》, 《고종대 정치변동 연구》, 《조선정치의 마지막 얼굴》 등이 있다.

상명대학교 역사콘텐츠학과 명예교수 Professor Emeritus, Department of Korean Historical Content, Sangmyung University 연세대학교 사학과를 졸업하고 동 대학원에서 석사와 박사 학위를 받았다. 1987년 상명여자대학교에 부임하여 2022년 2월에 정년 퇴임하였고, 현재 상명대학교 명예교수로 활동하고 있다. 미국 Harvard University에서 Visiting Scholar를 지냈고, University of Texas at Austin에서는 영어로 한국사를 강의하였다. 한국 근대사를 전공한 역사학자로서 대한민국역사박물관의 관장을 역임하였다. 2009년과 2015년에 검인정 중학교 역사와 고등학교 한국사 교과서를 대표 집필하였다. 서울시 교육청 역사교육위원회의 위원장을 역임하였고, 한일역사공동연구위원회 제2기 근현대분과 간사를 지냈으며, 한국국제협력단(KOICA) ‘DR콩고 국립박물관 건립 사업’의 총괄 PM을 맡아 활동하였다. 재외동포청의 전신인 재외동포재단의 요청으로 여러 차례 해외 한글학교 교장 및 교사 초청 연수에서 강의하였고, 우즈베키스탄 한국교육원·미국 미주한국학교총연합회(KOSAA)·재일본한글학교 관동 및 관서협의회·광복회 미서부지회 청소년 민족학교 등에서 현지 강연을 하였다. 아울러 영국, 오스트리아, 오스트레일리아를 대상으로 온라인 연수를 진행하였다. 저서로는 《주진오의 한국 현재사》(2021), 《한국 여성사 깊이 읽기》(공저, 2013), 《공공역사를 실천 중입니다》(공저, 2023) 등이 있고, 《역사는 누구를 위한 것인가?》(2023)를 번역하였다. He completed his undergraduate studies in history at Yonsei University and earned both his master’s and doctoral degrees from the same university. He joined Sangmyung Women’s University in 1987, retired in February 2022, and now serves as Professor Emeritus. He has also been a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University and taught Korean history in English at the University of Texas at Austin. As a specialist in modern Korean history, he served as Director of the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History. He was the lead author of the nationally certified middle school history textbook (2009) and high school Korean history textbook (2015). His other roles include chair of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education’s History Education Committee, secretary for the Modern and Contemporary History Division of the Korea?Japan Joint History Research Committee (Phase II), and project manager for KOICA’s “National Museum Construction Project of the DR Congo.” He has delivered lectures for overseas Korean?school principals and teachers at the request of the Overseas Koreans Foundation and has given on?site lectures in Uzbekistan, the United States, and Japan, as well as online programs for audiences in the United Kingdom, Austria, and Australia. His major publications include Chu Chin Oh’s Contemporary Korean History (2021), A Deep Reading of Korean Women’s History (co?authored, 2013), and Practicing Public History (co?authored, 2023). He also translated For Whom Is History? (2023).
