이야기의 꽁무니를 이어나갈 때마다 아르판의 얼굴에 번지는 행복한 미소는 소설이란 어떻게 쓰여야 하는가를 내게 알려주었다. 그는 공동체의 언어를 가꾸고 다듬는 일에 대가 없는 행복을 느끼는 진짜 작가였다. 막 데뷔하여 글감을 찾아 주유하는 병아리 소설가로서, 나는 밤마다 아르판이 보여주는 문학 강연에 넋을 잃고 몰입했다. 중요한 건 기교가 아니었다. 타인의 자유로운 영혼에 간섭할 고상한 메시지도 아니고, 미래를 포장하는 허황된 웅변도 아니었다. 중요한 건 이야기 자체의 즐거움이었다.

The happy smile that spread across Arpan’s face each time the tail of one story continued on to another taught me how stories were supposed to be written. He was a true writer who experienced the unpaid joy of crafting and refining the language of his community. As a young writer, still wet behind the ears, just debuted and still searching for something to write about, I was enchanted by Arpan’s nightly literature lessons. I became immersed in them. What mattered was not technique. Nor was it a lofty message that would meddle in the free soul of another, or a hollow speech presenting some tidy vision of the future. What mattered was the joy of the story itself.

“한국에서 요즘 유행하는 노래입니다. 그런데 사실 이건 번안곡이에요. 원래는 삼사 년 전에 일본, 아, 그런 나라가 있습니다, 아무튼, 그 일본에서 만들어진 곡이거든요. 그러나 알고 보면 일본 것도 아니지요. 선진 문명을 받아들이던 시절에 일본이 흠모하던 영국의 동요가 그 뿌리니까요. 하지만 영국 이전에는 네덜란드의 서민 음악이었고, 그 음악은 17세기 중국 광동 지방으로부터 흘러나온 전통 리듬에 뿌리를 두고 있답니다. 자, 그렇다면 중국 광동 지방의 어느 중국인이 이 노래의 원작자일까요?”

“This song is really popular in Korea right now. But it’s actually a remake. The original came out three or four years ago in Japan―you know―this other country called Japan―well, anyway―the song was made in Japan. But in fact, it’s not really Japanese. It’s based on a British children’s song. Back when the Japanese were embracing cultures they considered to be advanced, that song was well loved in Japan. But before it was known as a British song, it was a commoners’ song in The Netherlands, and before that, you could trace the rhythm back to a traditional song that was passed down from the seventeenth century in the Guangdong province in China. So, if that’s true, does that mean the original author of this song was some Chinese guy from Guangdong Province?”
