성 밖 한끝에 사는 병일(丙一)이가 봉직하고 있는 공장은 역시 맞은편 성 밖 한끝에 있었다.
맞은편이지만 사변형의 대각(對角)은 채 아니므로 30분쯤 걷는 그 길은 중로에서 성안 시가지의 한 모퉁이를 약간 스칠 뿐이다.
집을 나서면 부(府)행정 구역도에 없는 좁은 비탈길을 10여 분간 걸어야 한다.
그 길은 여름날 새벽에 바재게1) 뜨는 햇빛도 서편 집추녀 밑에 간신히 한 뼘 넓이나 비칠까 말까 하게 좁은 길을 사이에 두고 작은 집들이 서로 등을 부빌 듯이 총총히 들어박힌 골목이다.

The factory where Py?ngil worked lay on the outside edge of the city wall, just as his home did but on the opposite side of the city.
The two edges might well be opposite but as the angles of the wall did not form a perfect square his thirty-minute walk to work just scraped past one corner of the inner city mid-route.
Once he left his house he had to walk for about ten minutes down a narrow, steep path, which did not appear on the city government’s borough map.
That path ran between tiny houses packed so tightly together that they seemed to rub each other’s backs and past alleys so narrow that even the rap-idly rising dawn sun on a summer’s day barely illuminated a hand’s width beneath the eaves on the western side.
