책 소개

시인 김원길의 시를 영어로 번역한 대역본이다. 지금까지 시인이 발표한 시집과 미수록 된 작품에서 73편을 원작자가 엄선한 것을 번역하였다. 특히 기존에 번역한 작품 중에서 오역 및 탈자는 바로 잡고 신작을 추가하였으며, 원작가의 의도를 최대로 반영하였다.

1942년 경북 안동 출생. 성균관대 영문학사 및 건국대학교 대학원 국문학 석사 취득. 1971년 『월간문학』으로 한국시단에 등반하였다. 시집으로 『개안』, 『내 아직 적막에 길들지 못해』, 『들꽃다발』,『아내는 남자로 태어나고 싶다 한다』,『지례유사』, 『적막행』, 산문집으로 『시를 위하여』및『안동의 해학』을 펴냈다. 1989년 지례 창작마을 설립. 2007년 옥관 문화훈장 수훈하다. Born in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea. He graduated from Sungkyunkwan University with a BA and an MA from the Graduate Shool of Konkuk University. In 1971, he debuted through wolgan munhak as a poet. He has published volumes of collected poems such as Enlightenment, I’m Not Accustomed Yet with Quiescence, Deulkkochdabal (A Bunch of Wild Flowers), Anaeneun Namjaro Taeeonago Sipda Handa (Wife Wishes to Be Born as a Man) and also published a collection of essays and stories such as For Poetry and Humour from Andong. He founded Jirye Artists’ Colony in 1989. In 2007, he was awarded the Okgwan Order of Culture Merit from Korean government.

Eliot and The Criterion』, 『“Action Francaise” Condemnation and Other Essays』 등이 있다. 번역서로는 영문판 『Korean Buddhist Poems』와 『Birds, Flowers, and Men』과 한글판 초역 시집으로는『오메로스』(Omeros)와 『Ronald Stuart Thomas: Collected Poems 1945~1990』이 있다. Jeo-Yong Noh was born in Hamyang, Gyeongsangnam-do, Republic of Korea in 1948. He was awarded a DPhil in English literature from the University of Oxford in 1991. He retired from teaching at Yeungnam University in 2013, and served the T S Eliot Society of Korea as president from 2003 to 2005. He published Biographical Themes in T. S. Eliot’s Early Poetry, T. S. Eliot and the Criterion, and “Action Francaise” Condemnation and Other Essays. He also published Korean Buddhist Poems and Birds, Flowers, and Men in English translation along with Omeros, and Ronald Stuart Thomas: Collected Poems 1945~1990 in Korean for the first time.

For this volume, I have chosen a total of seventy-four poems related to the various themes of quiescence from my complete works. Some poems are themathically related to a sadness of loneliness or longingness or parting or remorse. Others are related to a painful cry of wandering or desire or a placidity of resignation or meditation or quiescence as in an elevated state of philsophical speculation.

이 시집에 수록하기 위해, 나는 적막과 관련이 있다고 생각되는 다양한 주제를 담은 시 74편을 나의 전 작품에서 골랐다. 어떤 작품은 외로움에서 오는 슬픔과 동경 혹은 이별과 회한을 노래하고 있다. 또 다른 작품들은 철학적 사색이 고양된 상태에서 바라본 고통스런 방황과 욕망, 체념, 명상, 적막감 등을 보여주고 있다.
