그는 다시 건넌방으로 들어갔다. 그때야 그는 새아씨가 타 죽으려고 이불을 쓰고 누워 있는 것을 보았다. 그는 새아씨를 안았다. 그러고는 불길을 찾았다. 그러나 나갈 곳이 없었다. 그는 하는 수 없이 지붕으로 올라갔다. 그는 비로소 자기의 몸이 자유롭지 못한 것을 알았다. 그러나 그는 자기가 여태까지 맛보지 못한 즐거운 쾌감을 자기의 가슴에 느끼는 것을 알았다. 새아씨를 자기 가슴에 안았을 때 그는 이제 처음으로 살아난 듯하였다. 그는 자기의 목숨이 다한 줄 알았을 때, 그 새아씨를 자기 가슴에 힘껏 껴안았다가 다시 그를 데리고 불 가운데를 헤치고 바깥으로 나온 뒤에 새아씨를 내려놀 때에 그는 벌써 목숨이 끊어진 뒤였다. 집은 모조리 타고 벙어리는 새아씨 무릎에 누워있었다. 그의 울분은 그 불과 함께 사라졌을는지! 평화롭고 행복스러운 웃음이 그의 입 가장자리에 엷게 나타났을 뿐이다.

He returned to her room. Only then did he see her. He found her lying under a quilt, wishing for death. He gathered her up in his arms and looked for away out. But there wasn’t any to be found. Left with no other option, he climbed out onto the roof. He realized that he could no longer move his body freely. Yet he also felt a sense of delight in his heart unlike anything he had ever known. As he clutched his mistress to his chest, he felt fully alive for the first time. When he sensed that his end was drawing near, he embraced his mistress tightly and then bore his way out through the fire. He put her down outside, his own life already slipping away. The whole house had burned down, and the mute lay in his mistress’s lap. Had his indignation died out with the fire? A happy, peaceful smile formed faintly on his lips.
