에드워드 와그너 (지은이) 정보 더보기

미국 오하이오주 클리블랜드에서 태어나, 1941년에 하버드대학에 입학해 1943년까지 공부한 후 육군에 입대해 1946년까지 근무했다. 이어 1946년부터 1948년까지 한국에서 미군정 문관으로 외교 업무를 담당했으며, 하버드대학으로 돌아와 1949년에 졸업하고, 1951년에 동아시아 지역학으로 석사학위를 받았다. 곧 박사 과정에 입학해 1953년에서 1955년까지 일본 덴리天理대학에서 다카하시 도루高橋亨 교수로부터 한국사를 지도받았다. 1959년에 박사학위를 받았으며, 하버드대학에서 한국어 강좌를 담당했다. 와그너는 35년 넘게 하버드대학에서 한국학의 개척과 발전을 위해 헌신했으며 그의 노력으로 축적된 옌칭도서관 내 한국학 자료실은 서구 한국학연구의 중심이 되었다. 또한 하와이대학의 에드워드 슐츠와 함께 영어로 번역한 이기백 선생의 <한국사신론>은 한국학에서 일종의 지표 역할도 겸하고 있을 만큼 중요하다. 그는 정년 이후에도 송준호와 평생에 걸쳐 공동으로 추진해온 ‘와그너-송 문과방목프로젝트’의 완성을 위해 애썼으나 완성되는 것을 보지 못하고 2001년 11월 7일에 작고했다.

Gari Ledyard (1932-) is Sejong Professor Emeritus of Korean History at Columbia University. He wrote on diverse aspects of the Kory? and Chos?n dynasties including the invention of the Korean alphabet, Han'g?l, during the fifteenth century.

케이 블랙(1928~2020)은 미국인으로 1973년 처음 한국을 방문했을 때 한국미술에 매료되어 40대에 덴버대학에서 다시 한국미술사 공부를 시작하여 석사학위를 받았다. 그 뒤 책거리를 비롯한 한국미술 연구에 몰두하여 와그너와 함께 “책거리 그림”(1993)과 “궁중 스타일 책거리”(1998) 등의 논문을 발표하였다. 또한 에카르트 데게와 함께 발표한 “상트 오틸리엔수도원 소장 정선의 진경산수화”(1999/2000)에서는 이 그림에 그려진 금강산의 시점에 대해 창의적인 해석을 제시한 바 있다. Kay E. Black (1928-2020) received a master’s degree at the University of Denver. Her publications include such articles on ch’aekkŏri as “Ch’aekkŏri Paintings: A Korean Jigsaw Puzzle”(1993) and “Court Style Ch’aekkŏri”(1998), both coauthored with Edward W. Wagner. She also published “St. Ottilien’s Six ‘True View Landscapes’ by Chŏng Sŏn” with Eckarte Dege, which presents an inspring, new interpretation of the viewing spot of Diamond Mountain in the painting.
