J. G. 프레이저 (지은이) 정보 더보기

스코틀랜드에서 태어난 고전 인문학자로 글래스고와 케임브리지대 트리니티칼리지에서 공부했다. 그는 1907~1908년에 리버풀대 교수를 역임한 것 외에는 죽을 때까지 줄곧 케임브리지의 연구원으로 재임했다. 프레이저는 원래 아버지의 뜻에 따라 법학을 공부했으나 에드워드 타일러의 『원시문화』를 읽고 원시 종교를 비롯한 인류의 종교사에 깊은 관심을 가지게 되었다. 프레이저의 연구는 인류학, 종교학, 사회학, 민속학, 문학, 예술 등 방대한 분야에 걸쳐 지대한 영향을 끼쳤으며, 특히 대표작 『황금가지』는 다윈의 『종의 기원』과 마찬가지로 독창적이고 기원적인 저서로 손꼽힌다. 다른 저작으로는 『파우사니아스의 그리스 여행기』, 『사회 인류학의 영역』, 『토테미즘과 족외혼』, 『불멸성의 신앙과 죽은 자의 숭배』, 『구약성서 속의 민속학』 등이 있다.
