이렇게 비 내리는 날이면 원구(元求)의 마음은 감당할 수 없도록 무거워지는 것이었다. 그것은 동욱(東旭) 남매의 음산한 생활 풍경이 그의 뇌리를 영사막처럼 흘러가기 때문이었다. 빗소리를 들을 때마다 원구에게는 으레 동욱과 그의 여동생 동옥(東玉)이 생각나는 것이었다. 그들의 어두운 방과 쓰러져가는 목조 건물이 비의 장막 저편에 우울하게 떠오르는 것이었다. 비록 맑은 날일지라도 동욱 오뉘의 생활을 생각하면, 원구의 귀에는 빗소리가 설레고 그 마음 구석에는 빗물이 스며 흐르는 것 같았다. 원구의 머릿속에 떠오르는 동욱과 동옥은 그 모양으로 언제나 비에 젖어 있는 인생들이었다.

On a rainy day like this, Won-gu’s heart became unbearably heavy. It was because he could see the image of the dreary life led by Dong-wook and his sister float in his mind as if on a screen. Whenever he listened to rain, Won-gu pictured Dong-wook and his younger sister Dong-ok. Their darkened room in a dilapidated wooden building loomed gloomily behind the curtain of rain. Even on a day when the sky was clear, when he thought of their life, the imagined sound of raindrops made him restless and the rainwater seemed to seep into a corner of his heart. Dong-wook and Dong-ok were, in Won-gu’s mind, people always soaked in rain.
