그리 오래지 않은 SNS 경험에 따르면 그곳의 말들은 전기포트 속 물방울이었다. 포르르 끓다가 부서지는 거품이 수면에 다시 합류했다. 일부는 증발하여 공기 중을 떠돌았다. 그대로 두자 물은 식었다. 때를 보아 스위치를 넣으면 다시 끓어 방울진 거품을 피워 올렸다. 그 과정을 무수히 반복하면 거품의 토대가 되는 수면의 높이만큼은 어느새 눈에 띄게 낮아진다는 사실이, 예정된 부서짐에도 불구하고 말을 그치거나 가두지 않는 이유일 터였다…….
According to my not-very-extensive experience with social media, the words people spewed out were like drops of water in an electric kettle: bubbles formed, crashed at the surface, and them merged with the water again, although some of it evaporated and remained in the air. When left on its own, though, the kettle simmered down. But when the electricity was turned on again, the water boiled and bubbled to the surface all over again. After countless repetitions of boiling and simmering down, the level of the water fell significantly, which was probably why some people did not kept their thoughts to themselves or stop talking, despite the bubbling and crashing at the surface.

인간사는 디즈니풍의 애니메이션이 아니며 소설은 기계가 아닌 생물이어서 내가 수습할 수 없는 어떤 세계를 향해 나아가고 있는데, 그곳이 대다수의 정직하고 선량하며 공평무사한 구성원들이 원하는 바로 거기인지는 알 수 없다. 그런 세계에서 우리는 어디까지 근엄해지고 어디까지 올발라질 수 있을까. 분명한 건 내 소설이 그러지는 못할 것 같다는 예감뿐이다.
The history of mankind is not a Disney animation, and fiction is not mechanical but organic. Fiction leads into a world that I cannot control, yet I also don’t know if that world is one that most honest, good, just people want. In such a world, how serious and how righteous can people become? The only thing that is obvious to me is a hunch that my works are probably not headed for that world.

소설을 둘러싼 정치적 올바름 논란이 불러온 창작물의 변천사 혹은 소설의 몰락기라 할 만한 「어느 피씨주의자의 종생기」는 결국 소설이란 무엇인가, 삶과 소설은 어떻게 같고 또 다른가라는 질문을 불러온다. 아니 소설이 삶 쪽으로 무한히 가까워질 수 있으나 삶 자체가 될 수는 없으며 오히려 그 간극인 소설적 결함이 역설적으로 삶의 허점을 들여다보게 하는 것이 아닌가를 반문한다. 「어느 피씨주의자의 종생기」는 소설의 이름을 다시 쓰고 소설의 범주를 넓히는 방법론 자체에 천착한 소설이면서, 동시에 소설이란 독자대중을 통해 발현된 시대정신 혹은 우리 시대의 문화적 한계치가 만드는 것이자 그 과정 자체임을 보여준 소설이다.
“The Story of P.C.,” a narrative of the transformation of creative works and the end of fiction brought on by controversies over literature and political correctness, brings us to the questions: What is fiction? And how do life and fiction differ or not differ? This short story retorts by arguing that fiction can come close to life, but cannot be it, and that the “flaws” in fiction, which are the gap between fiction and life, lead people to examine the flaws in life. “The Story of P.C.” redefines fiction and delves into the possible methodology for broadening the range of fiction. At the same time, it shows that fiction is a process and an outcome of the cultural limitations and spirit of the time expressed through the reading public.
