내가 왜 애초 여자의 말투에서 어떤 불편함도 느끼지 못했는지 알 것 같았다. 그녀의 목소리는 이 사건에 말을 얹고 싶어 안달 내거나, 두려움을 감추려 자신의 눈두덩을 지그시 누르는 이들의 손짓과는 확연히 달랐다. 그녀의 반응은 내가 너무도 익숙한 나머지, 과연 이게 화를 낼 문제인지조차 인식할 수 없는 어떤 언급들을 더 닮아 있었다. 그때, 그 선생님이 말했다.
“주현동에서는 무슨 일이든 일어날 수 있지.”
I realized why I felt no discomfort from the way she was talking. Her voice was different from that of others who were impatient to say something about the cases or who quietly pressed their eyelids to hide the fear in their eyes. Her response was very similar to the comments that I was so familiar with that I couldn’t even figure out whether to be mad or not.
Once, a teacher had said, “Anything can happen in Juhyeon-dong.”

그런데, 지금 서우는 어디 있어요? 그 순간, 나는 여전히 아무것도 알지 못했다. 나의 주인공이 왜 이러는지, 왜 이런 불안으로 앞을 바라보는지, 무엇을 숨기고 있는지. 그러나 그 목소리 덕분에 단 한 가지만은 추측할 수 있었다. 그녀가 서우라는 이름을 줄곧 기억하며 살아왔다는 것, 그것이 모든 일이 시작이자 끝일 수도 있다는 것. 그렇게 나는 제목을 완성할 수 있었다.
Where is Seo-u now? At that moment, I still didn’t know anything. I didn’t know why my main character was acting this way; why she was facing forward with such anxiety; what she was hiding. But I was able to deduce one thing thanks to that voice. It was that she constantly recalled the name Seo-u throughout her life, and that it could be the beginning or the end of everything. And so I completed the title of this story.

기존 스릴러의 세계에서 범죄를 주도적으로 기획하고 실행하는 주체가 대부분 남성이었다는 점을 고려한다면, 범인/탐정의 성별을 모호하게 하거나 혹은 기존 범죄구도의 성별을 전도하는 것만으로도 일정한 서사적 긴장과 반전의 효과를 획득할 수 있다는 게 이 장르의 장점이다. 물론 이는 이성애 중심적 성별규범이 한국의 대중적 상상력을 얼마나 공고하게 장악하고 있었는지를 역설적으로 증명하는 것이기도 하다.
Considering that the characters who planned and acted on crimes in existing thrillers weremostly men, women’s thrillers have an advantage of creating tension and twists by obscuring the gender of the criminal or the investigator or by reversing the gender roles in conventional murder mysteries. Of course, this paradoxically attests to the strong domination of heterosexual-centric gender norms in our society.
