서문(서언)
세월이 10년이면 강산도 변한다 했다. 서당 개 3년이면 풍월도 읊는다는데, 한 분야에서 10년 넘게 일했다면 누가 봐도 전문가라 할 수 있다. 이렇듯 10년이란 시간은 결코 짧지 않는 시간이다. 그럼에도 명리공부 20년은 그리 길어 보이지 않는 까닭은 무엇일 까.
명리(命理)공부를 20년 넘게 했다고 하니까 철학관 운영하느냐고 묻는 사람이 태반이다. 심지어 어떤 사람은 명리 강의도 하느냐, 어딜 가야 강의를 들을 수 있느냐고 묻는 사람도 있다. 단순히 취미 삼아 공부한다고 하면 ‘아깝다’고 한다. 무엇이 아깝다는 걸 까.
20여 년 전 어느 날. 직장생활을 하던 난 지방에 출장 갔다 오다가 잠시 쉬려고 고속도로 휴게소에 들른 적이 있다. 그 때 편의점 가판대에서 ‘인간의 부귀빈천(富貴貧賤)을 예측 한다’라고 표지에 써 놓은 명리 서적 한 권을 발견하였다. 잠깐 살펴 본 내용인 즉, 인간의 사주팔자(四柱八字)를 분석하는 초보자용 명리교과서였다. 당시에는 ‘명리’라는 단어를 처음 접해 봤기 때문에 대단한 호기심을 유발시켰고 그런 이유로 시간 날 때마다 읽고, 읽어 3번 이상을 반복해서 읽었던 것 같다. 나중에 명리공부를 제대로 하고나서 다시 보니 ‘한마디로 볼품없는 내용’이었지만 내가 명리학에 입문하게 된 결정적인 역할을 한 것은 분명한 것 같다.
그 이후로 ‘자평진전’, ‘적천수’, ‘삼명통회’, ‘궁통보감(난강망)’ 등 유명한 고전은 물론 ‘사주첩경(전 6권)’, ‘명리정종’, ‘명리요강’ 등을 비롯하여 현존하는 수많은 명리 관련 서적들을 닫치는 대로 읽었다. 절판된 책은 중고시장을 뒤져서라도 기어이 구하곤 하였다. 한 번 읽으면 쉽게 이해되지 않은 책은 최소한 5번 이상 정독하였다(대부분의 명리 서적들이 그렇다).
명리 서적만 읽은 것이 아니다. ‘우주변화의 원리’를 비롯하여 ‘당사주’, ‘주역’, ‘육임’, ‘육효’, ‘매화역수’, ‘기문둔갑’, ‘황제내경’, ‘풍수지리’, ‘관상’, ‘수상’, ‘족상’ 등등 심지어 ‘타로카드’와 관련된 서적까지 광범위하게 공부하였다. 책으로 공부하는 것이 부족하여 인터넷 강의는 물론 문화원, 대학교 평생교육원 등에서 직접 강의를 듣기도 하였다. 명리와 관련하여 그 내용에 대한 깊이, 이론적 배경 등은 물론이고 강의 방법과 태도 등등 그것을 공부하고 가르치는 학생들과 선생님들의 습성까지 참으로 다양한 명리 세계를 경험할 수 있었다.
그런 세월 속에 어느 덧 20여년이 지나갔다. 때론 아름아름 취미(돈 한 번 받은 적 없으니 취미가 확실하다)삼아 사주팔자를 봐 준 것만도 꽤나 된다. 육친·십성 정도 이해할 때 쯤 되니까 마치 도사가 된 것처럼 입이 근질거려서 미칠 지경이었다. 아는 사람을 만나면 사주 봐준다고 겁 없이 덤벼들곤 하였다. 그런데 이상한 것은 공부를 하면 할수록, 더 많이 알면 알수록 그런 행동들이 오히려 겁이 나는 이유는 뭘까. 오히려 입이 닫히고 벙어리가 되어 가는 이유는 뭘까.
10년, 20년, 30년, 40년 또는 그 이상 몸담고 있는, 현존하는 명리연구가들도 수두룩한데, 그들이 현업과 학계는 물론 재야에서 그 명성이 대단한데, 심지어 방송활동까지 하는 유명인사들도 많은데 고작 20년 세월을 가지고 어디다 함부로 명함을 내밀 수 있을 까.
20년 이상 명리 공부를 했다면 최소한 철학관이라도 운영하는 것이 일반적인 관례일 수 있다. 문화원이나 평생교육원 등에서 후학들을 위해 강의를 하는 것도 현명한 방법일 수 있다. 그러나 선 뜻 그렇게 나서지 못하는 이유는 지식과 경험이 짧다는 자학(?)이 크기 때문이다. 그러나 그것보다 더 겁나는 것이 있다. 인간의 운명을 함부로 논할 수 없다는, 어느 누구도 쉽게 떠들어서는 안 되는 것이 인간의 운명, 즉 천명(天命)이라는 사실을 깨달았기 때문이다.
인간의 운명은 인간으로서 누리는 최대한의 자유보장권이다. 그것이 옳고 그름을 떠나서, 그것의 부귀빈천과 길흉화복을 떠나서, 그 사람만이 가질 수 있는 고유의 DNA인 것이다. 그것을 어느 누가, 무슨 자격으로 진단하고 평가할 수 있단 말인 가. 참조할 사항으로 단순 조언(어드바이스) 정도는 귀여운 수준으로 이해될 수 있지만 그 운명을 단정 짓는다거나 막말을 하면서 절대 절명의 뜻인 양 결정지으려는 것이 참으로 무서운 일이라는 선입견 때문이다.
그렇다고 명리, 즉 인간의 사주팔자를 분석하고 진단하는 것이 잘못된 것이라는 건 결코 아니다. 이를 통해 다가올 미래의 길흉화복(吉凶禍福)에 대비한다는 점에서, 그리고 순천(順天), 즉 하늘의 뜻을 이해한다는 점에서 오히려 긍정적이며 정신적인 건강을 가져올 수 있다고 믿는다.
그렇다고 명리, 즉 사주팔자를 분석, 진단한 결과가 적중률이 아주 낮거나 실용성이 떨어진다는 것은 더더욱 아니다. 사실 명리를 공부하다가 스스로 놀랜 점은 적중률이 무척 높다는 사실이다. 만약 명리가 ‘사이비의 일종’이었다면 그 이론과 경험이 수백 년을 이어올 수 없었을 것이다. 역사와 전통이 있다는 것은 그만큼 인정받아 왔기 때문일 것이다. 그럼에도 적중률을 확신하지 못하는 명리연구가들이 있다면 그건 공부가 부족하거나 해석부족이라 할 수 있다. 특히 해석을 너무 단편적으로 한다거나 안이하게 하기 때문에 적중률이 떨어진다고 할 것이다. 공부를 하다가 어렵다고 느낀다는 것은 이런 해석의 어려움을 말하는 것이다. 그만큼 해석의 세계가 심오하고 광범위한 것이 명리학이다. 그래서 더더욱 명리공부에 깊이 빠졌는지 모른다.
명리공부를 하다가 느낀 점 중의 하나가 배타적인 환경이다. 지금까지 접한 명리연구가들과 관련된 서적 등의 공통된 특징을 보면 ‘내가 최고요, 나만 맞다’고 하는 사실(물론 모두가 그렇다는 것은 아니다)이다. 그러면서 나 외의 다른 어떤 누구도 이론이나 해석에 대해서는 배타성을 갖는다는 점이다. 안타까운 것은 그런 명리연구가일수록 숲은 못보고 나무만 보고 해석하는 부류들이었다는 점이다.
본인들이 얼마나 좁은 세계에 있는지를 모르고 더 넓은 세계, 이론과 경험과 실관이 더 많고 더 넓은 세계를 공부하지 못하고, 경험하지 못하고 단지 눈앞에 보이는 이익만 위해서 스스로 눈감고 귀 닫고 마음 닫고서 입만 열려 하는 지 안타까울 뿐이다. 그런 사람들에게 명리를 가르쳤다면 그 얼마나 후회스러울까. 그런 사람들에게 명리를 배운다면 그들의 미래는 어떻게 될 까. 그런 사람에게서 명리를 진단 받았다면 그 운명은 어떻게 될 까. 참으로 무섭고 한심하고 안타까운 일인 것이다.
명리공부를 취미삼아 하는 사람도 있지만 삶이 절실해서 하는 사람들도 많다. 삶이 절실해서 배우는 사람들에게 명리라는 것은 취미로 하는 사람들의 그것과는 비교할 수 없을 정도의 절대성을 갖고 있다. 그 들 중의 한 명이 나만 보면 ‘아깝다’를 남발한다. 그 사람도 몇 년 공부했지만 해석이 너무 어려워서, 그리고 겁이 나서 현업에 선 뜻 나서지를 못하고 있다고 한다. 참으로 안타깝기 그지없다.
명리를 쉽게 배우는 사람들도 있지만 몇 년을 배워도 부족한 사람들도 있다. 대부분이 배워도, 배워도 부족하다고 느낄 것이다. 그 이유는 너무 어렵게 가르치고 너무 어렵게 공부하고 너무 어렵게 해석하기 때문이다. 왜 그런지 모르지만 이론도 너무 많고 다양하며 그나마 ‘나만 맞다’는 아집만 난무하기 때문이다. 시중에 판매되는 책들도 천차만별하여 진위를 구분하기도 쉽지 않다. 단어 하나하나가 너무 어렵고 문장 하나하나가 너무 어렵다. 그러니 실용으로 응용하기에는 더욱 힘들고 어렵기만 하다. 때문에 대충, 대략 일개의 논리만 가지고 그것이 전부인 양 운명을 진단하고 해석하게 되니 안타깝기 이전에 인생이 슬퍼지는 것이다.
지난 20여년을 돌이켜 보면 참으로 많은 길을 돌아다녔던 것 같다. 바른 길이 있었는데도 몰랐던 것 같고 지름길이 있었는데도 멀리 돌아다녔던 것 같다. 명리학이 절실한 사람들이 이러한 경험을 했다면 참으로 답답할 지경이다. 명리를 새로 배우는 사람이나 한 참 배우고 있는 사람들도 마찬가지이다. 그런 경험을 가급적 안했으면 싶다. 쉽고 빨리 갈 수 있다면 그 길을 안내해주고 싶다. 그런 심정으로 지금까지 보고, 듣고 배우고 읽고 공부하고 실관해서 임상 실험한 내용들을 하나로 모아 이 책을 출간하고자 결심하였다.
필자는 명리를 공부하면서 1)모양새, 2)짜임새, 3)덧임새, 4)흐름새 등으로 명명한 나름대로의 해석단계와 해석방법을 정리해보았다. 모양새는 타고난 명의 모양을 관찰하는 단계이며 생긴 모양새대로 해석하는 것이다. 짜임새는 명의 모양새가 잘 짜여져 있는지, 흩으려져 있는지 깨져 있는지를 관찰하는 것이다. 덧임새는 짜임새에 무엇이 더해지고 무엇이 빠지는 것인지를 관찰하는 것이다. 그리고 흐름새는 그러한 명의 흐름, 즉 운의 모양새, 짜임새, 덧임새의 흐름을 관찰하는 것이다. 이것을 종합적으로 관찰, 해석하는 방법을 명리학자들은 통변술이라 부른다.
명리공부를 위와 같이 4단계로 구분해 보면 1)입문단계(또는 초급단계), 2)이해단계(또는 중급단계), 3)응용단계(또는 고급단계), 4)활용단계(또는 통변단계) 등으로 구분해 볼 수 있겠다. 최소한 이 4단계를 이수해야 명리학사 또는 명리술사로서 활동할 수 있을 것으로 본다.
필자는 이와 코드를 맞춰서 명리섭리I(이해편), 명리섭리II(응용편), 명리섭리III(통변편) 등 3권의 ‘명리의 이해 및 해석에 관한 실용서’를 집필하게 된 것이며 이 번의 것은 ‘명운섭리I(이해편)’로서 ‘명리의 입문 및 이해단계’에 해당하는 것이다. 명리학사 또는 명리술사를 희망하는 학우들에게 조금이나마 실용적인 지침서로서 역할이 될 것을 기대하게 된 것이다.
이 책은 기존의 이론을 뒤집을 정도로 혁명적인 것은 결코 아니다. 우리가 알고 있는 명리학을 쉽게 설명한 것에 불과하다. 누구나 쉽게 읽고 해석할 수 있도록 내용도, 단어도 가급적 단순하게 사용하였다. 고전 명리부터 현존 명리까지 각종 참고서를 총 망라하였는데 현대에 맞게, 특히 현업에서 쉽게 응용할 수 있도록 추렸다는 점이 특징이다. 불필요한 것, 괜히 이론만 복잡하게 하는 것, 검증되지 않는 것, 해석을 잘못하고 있는 것 등은 빼거나 수정하거나 주석을 달아서 알기 쉽도록 재편집하였다. 그래서 절실한 사람들이 편하게 공부할 수 있게 되었으면 좋겠다. 처음 접하는 사람들도 이 책으로 인해 명리학에 대한 바람직한 이해가 있었으면 좋겠다. 오직 그 바램으로 이 책을 출간하는 바이다.
아직도 현업과 학계에 정면으로 나서기에는 부족한 점이 많아서 명함을 내밀기를 꺼린다. 다만 나름대로 뜻하는 바가 있어 이렇게 책으로 나마 데뷔전을 치르며 인사를 드린다. 데뷔전에 나선 이상 나름대로 책무가 있기 때문에 그 책무를 다하기 위하여 일단 언더그라운드에서부터 출발하려 한다. 언젠가 현업으로 나서게 될 때 정식적으로 인사드리기로 하고 ‘단계(丹桂, 붉은 계수나무)’라는 닉네임으로 언더그라운드에서 조심스럽게 출발하려 하니 관심 있는 분들은 지켜봐 주시기 당부 드린다. 특히 명리 학계 및 업계의 선후배 여러분의 양해와 격려를 부탁드린다.
