Let’s Wrap It Up
“Alright, let’s wrap it up....Done!” When I lead a meeting, there are moments when my team members look at me with an expectant gaze, as if they’re waiting for something. They know the phrase that comes out of my mouth when discussions veer off-topic or when I feel enough debate has been had: “Let’s wrap it up.” Whether it’s time to make a decision or move on to the next topic, there comes a moment when the leader of the meeting needs to bring things to a close.
Decisions must be made clearly. If there’s been ample discussion relevant to the subject and purpose, then at some point, a decision must be made. If not, and the meeting drags on without direction, you’ll notice some people looking at their phones, and others losing interest with bored expressions. It’s manageable when the topic is related to everyone’s work, but when the discussion extends into unrelated matters, it’s natural for participants to lose focus.
There’s also a need to neatly summarize the key points discussed. A useful approach is asking, “So, this person is advocating for this, and that person is pushing for that. Am I understanding this correctly?” This helps ensure everyone is on the same page. After confirming, I say, “That matter is now resolved, so let’s move on to the next topic.”
A leader must always keep the meeting’s goal clear. By setting objectives before the meeting begins and guiding the discussion to align with those goals throughout, team members can better understand the purpose of the meeting and contribute meaningful insights. Moreover, when the meeting concludes and everyone knows exactly what to do next, only then can it be considered a success.
A leader’s role isn’t just about facilitating the meeting. Steering it in the right direction and knowing when to wrap things up efficiently is crucial for enhancing the team’s overall productivity.
