합정에는 조개 우물이란 뜻이 있다. 먼 옛날 이 동네에 있던 처형장에 사형수 머리를 벨 칼을 닦는 우물이 있었단다. 우물 바닥에 조개가 많아 조개 합과 우물 정井을 더해 합정이라 부른 것이다. 우물이 개발로 사라지고 지금은 더할 합合으로 쓴다. 그런데 나는 지난 수년간 합정을 다른 뜻으로 생각해 왔다. 우리처럼 길 잃은 사람들이 걷다가 마주치는, 그러니까 정 情이 고픈 이들이 다른 정과 만나 합合을 이루는 곳. 합정이란 동네를 그리 여겨 온 것이다. - 1장 합정 Well of Shalls

The place name Hapjung means “well of shells.” Long ago, there used to be a public execution site here and a well where the blades used to decapitate criminals were polished. The neighborhood was named after the pile of shells at the bottom of this well, with hap for “shell,” and jung for “well.” Since urban development did away with the well, they replaced hap with a homophonous character meaning “to combine.” For years, I understood the name of Hapjung differently. A place where lost ones like us walk into each other, where people hungry for jung, “affection,” meet similar others to become hap, combined ? that was how I thought of the place called Hapjung. - 1장 합정 Well of Shalls
