나는 금년 여섯 살 난 처녀애입니다. 내 이름은 박옥희이구요. 우리 집 식구라고는 세상에서 제일 예쁜 우리 어머니와 나와 단 두 식구뿐이랍니다. 아차 큰일 날 뻔했군, 외삼촌을 빼놓을 뻔했으니.
지금 중학교에 다니는 외삼촌은 어디를 그렇게 싸돌아다니는지 집에는 끼니때나 외에는 별로 붙어 있지를 않으니까 어떤 때는 한 주일씩 가도 외삼촌 코빼기도 못 보는 때가 많으니까요. 깜빡 잊기도 예사지요, 무얼.
우리 어머니는 그야말로 세상에서 둘도 없이 곱게 생긴 우리 어머니는 금년 나이 스물세 살인데 과부랍니다. 과부가 무엇인지 나는 잘 몰라도 하여튼 동리 사람들은 나더러는 ‘과부 딸’이라고들 부르니까 우리 어머니가 과부인 줄을 알지요. 남들은 다 아버지가 있는데 나만은 아버지가 없지요. 아버지가 없다고 아마 ‘과부 딸’ 이라나 봐요.

He’s in middle school, and always running around, so he’s hardly ever here except for meals. A lot of the time we won’t even see his shadow, for days on end. So can you blame me if I forgot him for a second?
My mother is so beautiful, there’s really no oneelse like her in the world. She’ll be twenty-three this year, and she’s a widow. I’m not sure what a widow is, but since the neighbors call me the “widow’s girl,” I figure she must be a widow. The other kids all have fathers, but not me. Maybe that has something to do with it.
