But now I know my worries are those I can embrace, while persisting, as long as I am
aware That I am alive among people every moment: And I know one more thing: That, as the dead often forget they are dead, It is not easy to be aware every moment that I am alive.
From Poet’s Note
Kim Joong-il’s work of writing poems is the work of endless restoration. We frequently
forget what is obvious: that we breathe, that we are all dying, and even that we’re alive. The poet stands on the transparent boundary called “poetry” and looks straight at the reader. Then, the reader and poet interfere with each other’s worlds―through the poems. When we read a poem, in that moment of breaking the boundary, we suddenly remember what we’ve forgotten: our life, death, and being.
