책속에서
문명 시대라고 명명할 수 있는 지표 가운데 가장 중요한 것이 문자라고 해도 과언이 아니다. 유물이나 유적과 더불어 그 시대 사람들이 남겨 놓은 기록을 통해서 그 시대를 알 수 있는 시대가 역사시대이며, 문명 시대는 그 역사시대의 시작점이기 때문이다.
당대의 사람들이 파피루스에 써 놓은 글을 통해 이집트 문명에 대한 것을 알 수 있고, 갑골에 새겨 놓은 글을 통해 우리는 황하 문명에 대하여 알 수 있다. 인더스 문명 시대에도 분명히 문자가 사용되었고, 그들이 인장에 새겨 놓은 문자들이 있다. 그러나 우리는 그 문자들을 그저 구경할 수 있을 뿐이다. 파피루스의 글자들과 갑골의 글자들이 우리에게 말을 걸어오지만, 인장에 새겨진 인더스의 글자들은 우리에게는 아직 구경거리일 뿐, 말을 걸어오지 않고 침묵하고 있는 것이다. 유구무언(有口無言)이 아니라 유문무전(有文無傳), 즉 문자는 있으나 우리에게 그 의미를 전해주지 못
하고 있는 것이다.
그래서 일부 학자들은 인더스 문명을 역사시대로 분류하지 않고, 원사시대(原史時代: Protohistory)라고 부르기도 한다. 문자를 통해서 그 시대에 대해 알 수 있는 시대가 역사시대인데, 문자는 있으나 우리가 그 문자를 통해서 그 시대를 알 수는 없는 시대이기 때문에, 선사시대와 역사시대 중간에 놓인 시대라는 의미이다.
왜 다른 문명 지역의 문자와는 달리 인더스의 문자들은 아직 해독되지 못하고 있는 것일까. 여러 이유가 있는데 가장 중요한 것은 인더스 문명의 주인공들과 이후 역사의 주인공들이 다르다는 점이다. 현재 인도 역사의 주인공들은 인더스 문명 다음 단계에 등장한 사람들이다. 다시 말해서 인더스의 주역들은 다음 단계의 주역들에게 밀려 무대에서 내려갔고, 새로운 사람들이 무대에 등장하면서 역사적 단절이 생긴 것이다.
