한국어를 더듬더듬 할 줄 아는 흑인 바텐더가 황급히 나와 상황을 수습하려 했지만 남자는 울음을 그치지 않았다. 울음은 거의 통곡에 가까워졌다. 뒤늦게 달려온 사장이 건장한 스태프들을 동원해 남자를 밖으로 끌고 나간 뒤에야 탭하우스는 차분한 분위기를 회복할 수 있었다. 알은 매우 당황해서, 자신이 한국말을 알아듣지 못했기 때문에 손님이 울음을 터뜨린 것인지 바텐더에게 물었다. 바텐더는 웃으면서 고개를 저었다. 아마도 아주 슬픈 일이 있었겠지. 이제 막 인생이 끝나도 괜찮을 만큼. 바텐더는 그렇게 말했다. 알은 고개를 끄덕이면서 중얼거렸다. 하지만 그렇게 슬플 때 사람들은 일반적으로 맥주를 마시러 오지 않는데…….

The black bartender who could stammer out sentences in Korean hurried to straighten out the situation, but the man didn’t stop crying. His sobs turned into wails. Only after the owner rushed in and dragged the man out with a few burly emplyees, did the pub become calm again. Confused about the whole situation, Al asked the bartender if the man had begun to cry because Al couldn’t understand Korean. The bartender smiled and shook his head.
He probably had something very sad happen to him, said the bartender. So sad that it would have been okay for his life to end.
Al nodded, but muttered under his breath, But when people are that sad, they don’t usually come to drink beer...
