휴대폰을 꺼내 지하철 노선도를 확인했다. 집에 가려면 지하철을 두 번이나 갈아타야 한다. 아버지는 왜 가출을 해가지고. 본가에 도착하면 아홉 시, 두 시간 정도 엄마에게 설명을 듣고 대책회의를 한다 치면 열한 시, 다시 내 집에 도착하면 열두 시 반, 씻고 어쩌고 하면 한 시 반. 아, 아버지는 왜 가출을 해가지고!
I checked the subway routes on my cell phone. I needed to transfer twice to go to my parents'. 'Why on earth did he have to run away! It'll be around nine when I arrive there, and it'll take about two hours to listen to Mother’s explanation and talk about what to do. I'll be back home around half past twelve. Washing up and so on, it'll be half past one. Ah, why in the world did he have to run away!'

권위적인 아버지들이 문제라거나 아버지 때문에 가족들이 불행하다고 말하려던 것은 아닙니다. 이 지독한 가부장 문화는 누구를 행복하게, 혹은 불행하게 하는지 묻고 싶었습니다. 소설을 쓰며 제가 얻은 답은 소설의 결말과 같습니다.
I never intended, though, to say that the authoritative father is problematic or that the father makes the other family members feel unhappy. I just wanted to ask whom this staunch culture of patriarchy makes happy or unhappy. The answer I got in the course of writing the story is the same as its ending.

조남주는 흔히 ‘4인 가족’으로 명명되는 정상 가족의 신화를 깨트리려 하면서도, 그것을 아예 해체시키는 방식이 아니라 여전히 가족이라는 공동체가 가지는 가치를 수긍하는 태도를 보여준다. 다시 말해 어떤 형태의 구성원도 가족이 될 수 있다는 다소 추상적인 차원이 아니라 현실적으로 우리가 상상 가능한 이상적 공동체의 형태가 가족일 수밖에 없음을 인정하는 것이다.
On the one hand, the writer tries to shatter the myth of the normal family, also known as 'a family of four'; on the other, she refrains from completely dismantling it by still approving of the value of the community called "family." In other words, she does not propose the rather abstract argument that a family may come in any form or shape. Instead, she acknowledges that the family may be imagined as an ideal community, but should also be in realistically imaginable forms or shapes.
