리히 박사가 심리학자가 된 이유는 자신의 마음을 치유하기 위해서였다. 알코올 중독자였던 아버지가 어머니에게 상처를 줬고 어린아이였던 그는 아버지를 원망하며 성장했다. 두 살 때부터 아버지와 헤어져 살았지만, 오랫동안 아버지를 마음에 품었다. 그는 어떤 사람이 자신을 포함해 가족 모두를 힘겹게 만드는 이유가 무엇인지 찾으러 다녔고, 그러다 심리학을 만났다. 본격적으로 사람의 마음을 공부하기 위해 예일대학교에서 학사, 석사를 했고, 이후 인지치료의 창시자인 아론 T. 백의 지도 아래 펜실베이니아대학교 의과대학 정신과에서 박사 후 펠로우십을 했다. 그 뒤로 20년이 넘게 심리학자로 살아오면서 인지요법 학회와 국제 인지치료협회의 회장직을, 해당 단체에서 우수 임상의사상을 수상하며 미국 심리학계의 권위자로서 살아왔다. 심리학자이자 임상심리 전문가로서 주로 우울증과 불안, 지나친 후회로 고생하는 사람들을 치료해왔다. 그러한 임상 경험을 토대로 사람들에게 부정적 감정을 극복하는데 도움을 주는 새로운 방법을 소개하고 있다. 『걱정 활용법(The Worry Cure)』을 비롯해 전문가와 일반인을 대상으로 하는 29권의 책을 저술했다. 책은 전 세계 21개 언어로 번역되어 널리 읽히고 있다. 현재 웨일코넬 의과대학 정신의학과 임상심리 교수이자, 미국 인지치료연구소의 소장이다.

Napolitano 박사는 중국 베이징의 자살예방 프로젝트의 CBT 훈련 디렉터를 맡고 있으며, International Association for Cognitive Psychotherapy의 국제수련 위원회의 의장을 역임했다. Napolitano 박사는 Academy of Cognitive Therapy의 대외 이사와 선임 회원이고, 뉴욕시 Cognitive Behavoral Therapy Association의 창립 멤버이다.

사회불안장애와 인지행동치료, 부모 교육을 연구하고 있는 심리학과 교수. 임상심리학자. 까탈스러운 한 아이의 아빠. 소아청소년 정신건강의학과에서 수련을 받은 임상심리전문가인 만큼 아이는 잘 키울 수 있을 것이라 자신했는데, 그것이 터무니없는 오만이었다는 것을 깨닫는 데는 채 100일도 걸리지 않았다. 겨우 세 살 먹은 아이와 다투고 죄책감에 사로잡히고, 또 버럭 화내고 후회하기를 반복하던 어느 날, 알고 있는 인지행동치료 기법을 총동원하여 나부터 변화하기로 마음먹었다. 지금 이 순간도 예상을 빗나가는 아이의 행동과 강한 감정 표현에 당황하며 분투하고 있을 육아 동지들에게 심리학자의 처지도 크게 다르지 않다는 위로를 전하고 싶어서 책을 쓰기 시작했다. 지난 몇 년간 주 양육자 아내와 함께 체험한 시행착오와 육아법을 솔직하게 담았다. 어느덧 다섯 살이 된 까탈쟁이 아이에게 ‘아빠가 너를 사랑한다’는 증거를 이렇게 남긴다. 고려대학교 인문학부에 입학하여 사회학과로 진학했다. 정신병리와 심리치료에 흥미를 느껴 전공보다 심리학을 더 열심히 공부하다 같은 대학교 심리학과에서 임상 및 상담 심리학을 전공, 석사·박사 학위를 취득했다. 서울대학교병원 정신건강의학과에서 임상심리전문가 수련을 받았으며, 고려대학교 사회불안장애 상담센터, KU 마음건강연구소에서 인지행동치료를 해왔다. 현재 충북대학교 심리학과 교수이자 충북대학교 심리건강센터장으로 재직하고 있다. 지은 책으로는 >잠 못 드는 당신을 위한 밤의 심리학>(공저) 등이 있으며, 옮긴 책으로는 >정서도식치료 매뉴얼: 심리치료에서의 정서조절>(공역) 등이 있다.
