이 소설 읽기의 동력인, 또 하나의 당신? 몸이 마주치는 자리에서는 자신의 실증적 표상인 얼굴 때문에 섣불리 나타나지 않는, 이렇게 이런 소설의 ‘당신’을 용납함으로써나 슬며시 스며나오는, 그러면서도 여전히 어디에 어떻게 포개져 있는지 불확실한, 당신이면서 당신이 아닌, 또 하나의 당신―우선은 그렇게 일컬어두자. 그러면 희미하게나마 의식하겠는가, 당신이 나를 헛보며 소리 없이 말을 되받아 건넨 상대가 실상은 그 또 하나의 당신이었음을. 그리하여 당신의 당신 자신과 나의 ‘당신’인 당신을 끊임없이 오가는 넓이 속에 부득이 펼쳐진 당신! 여기서 당신은 그중의 한쪽으로 고정될 수 없다. 그 두 당신을 하나의 당신으로 부르는 나에 의해.그러므로 만약 이 새로운 어쩔 수 없음이 글읽기의 눈짓 속에 깊이 배어들기를 희망한다면, 당신은, 차후, 적어도 행간을 띄우는 자리에서만은, 의식적으로라도 눈길을 멈추어야만 하리라.

Is it, then, another you that powers your reading of this story? A you that is usually hidden, in meetings of bodies, behind the empirical representation of the you that is your face, now gently starting to reveal itself as you begin to accept the you of a story like this, though it is, of course, not yet completely clear, exactly how and where they all fold in together, this other you who both is, and is not you. Let us leave it at that for now. Can you sense it now, if only faintly? How you mistook me? How the object of your silent retorts was actually yet another you? And so there you are, necessarily spread across that vast distance between you yourself and the you that is my you! It is impossible, here, to fasten you to either one of these sides. Not when I am calling upon these two yous as one.Therefore, if we are to hope that this new necessity might steep its way into the reading action of the eyes themselves, you must, from now on, if only when skipping those spaces between lines, momentarily (and if needs be, consciously) stop the progress of your gaze.
