“아아, 혼자. 그런데 뭐가 혼자라고 말했습니까?”
“혜진의 마음, 혼자입니다.”
나는 이 친구의 말을 도무지 알아들을 수 없었다. 그게 아내의 심장이 하나라고 말하는 것인지, 아내가 스스로 혼자라고 생각한다는 것인지. 그러자 이 친구는 맥주 캔을 내려놓고 종이와 펜을 달라고 하더니 그림을 그리기 시작했다. 제일 먼저 숲이 만들어졌다. 그 숲은 우리가 흔히 보는 소나무 숲 같은 게 아니라 밀림 같은 것이었는데, 그 숲 안에서 아이가 두 눈을 감은 채 누워 있었다.
“이것은 숲이었습니다. 저는 아기였습니다. 저는 혼자였습니다. 저는 잠자고 있었습니다.”
그러더니 이 친구는 아기의 두 눈을 그리더니 얼굴 양옆으로 물방울을 그리기 시작했다. 그러자 그림 속의 아이는 눈물을 흘리기 시작했다.

“Ahh, alone. But, so, what did she say was alone?”
“Hye-jin’s heart, is alone.”
I had no idea what the fellow was talking about―whether he was saying that my wife actually had one heart, or that she considered herself to be on her own. Then, as he put his beer can down, the fellow asked for a pen and paper and began to draw. The first thing to appear on the page was a forest. It wasn’t the kind of pine forest we might be used to, but something more like a jungle―but at any rate, in this forest lay a baby, its eyes closed.
“It was forest. I was baby. I was alone. I was sleeping.”
Then the fellow drew two eyes on the baby and began to draw tears on either side of the baby’s face. Then the baby in the drawing began to cry.
