About the Author

그의 아버지는 피해를 입지 않은 구릉지의 논밭을 포함해 집안의 농토를 모두 팔아버렸다. 습지가 되어 갈밭으로 변한 과거의 농토 위에서 하염없이 울다가 문득 눈물을 그친 뒤 행한 첫 번째 일이었다. 일가의 만류가 없었다면 그의 아버지는 선산조차 기꺼이 내다 팔아버렸을 거였다. 어느 먼 곳 지류에 첫 준설선이 나타난 이후로 그즈음 고향의 강에서도 드물기는 했으나 미국이나 일본에서 수입한 중고 준설선을 볼 수 있었다. 그해 큰물의 원인은 무분별한 모래 채취 때문이었다. 여기저기 강바닥과 둔치를 파헤친 탓에 강 속 사구들이 무너져 부유하던 모래들이 때마침 내린 비로 거세어진 난류에 휩쓸린 진흙과 더불어 강을 가득 메워 곳곳에서 강물이 제방을 넘었다.

The father sold all of the land the family had farmed, including the paddies and fields in the hills that had not been damaged by the flood. That was the first thing he did after he abruptly stopped weeping in their family’s former farmland that had turned into a swamp and overrun with reeds. If it had not been for the vehement objections of his relatives, he would have also sold the family cemetery hill in a heartbeat. After the appearance of the first dredging ship in a far-off tributary, one could, on rare occasions, spot a dredging ship bought secondhand from America or Japan on his hometown river. The reason behind the flood that summer was the indiscriminate dredging. With the riverbeds and riverbanks dug up here and there, the loose sand from the underwater dune had collapsed and combined with the mud. It had washed downstream in the heavy rain and filled the river, flooding areas throughout the village.


하지만 그의 아버지는 좌절하기는커녕 투지를 불태웠다. 노을이 깔린 강처럼 그의 아버지도 붉게 번들거렸다. 그의 아버지는 다른 업체를 두 군데나 인수했다. 손을 털고 강을 떠나는 두 명의 사장은 그의 아버지의 불운을 기원했다. 그의 아버지는 호탕하게 웃었다. 그들의 저주에는 이렇게 응수해 주었다. 두고 보라지. 강이 이기나 내가 이기나.

But instead of being defeated, the father’s conviction burned even brighter. Like the river glimmering in the evening sun, the father also burned red. He took over two other companies. The two owners threw in the towel and wished him ill luck as they left. He laughed heartily. Their curses were met with, We’ll see who wins in the end―that river or me.
