이십몇 년 전 어느 짧은 시기 동안 나는 나보다 나이가 네 살 정도 많은 한 여자에게 깊이 빠졌는데 그 이름은 수미라고 했다. 당시 나는 에스페란토어를 가르치는 학원에 다니고 있었는데 같은 클래스에 두 명의 미국인 학생이 있었다. 그중의 한 명이 수미의 남자친구인 얼이었다. 언제부턴가 얼은 수업에 여자친구인 수미를 데리고 왔다. 수미는 내가 몰입할 수 있었던 최초의 사람이었다. 내가 수미에게 빠진 것은 그녀의 외모가 아름다웠기 때문이었다. 그녀는 큰 키였으나 전혀 부피감을 주지 않는 가늘고 버드나무 같은 몸매를 가졌다. 얼굴은 갸름하고 좀 긴 편이었고 머리카락은 몹시 윤기 나는 검은빛이었는데 목덜미를 살짝 덮는 길이였다. 피부는 매끈하게 희고 눈은 가늘고 길게 찢어졌다. 그녀의 외모의 첫인상은 여자고등학교의 연극축제에서 남자 주인공 역할을 맡아 하는, 어느 정도 중성적인 표정의 아름답고 흰 얼굴에 키가 크고 팔다리가 길고 날씬한 소녀의 인상이었다. 그녀가 아름답지 않았다면 나는 그녀에 대해서 아무런 기억을 갖고 있지 않았을 것이다.

More than twenty years ago, for a short period, I was in love with a girl who was four years my senior
and whose name was Su-mi. At the time I was going to an educational center that offered a course in Esperanto. There were two Americans in my class. One of them, Earl, was Su-mi’s boyfriend. At some point, Earl started bringing Su-mi to class with him. Su-mi was the first person who thoroughly captivated me. The reason I fell for Su-mi was her beauty. She was tall, but her body was thin, like a willow tree that gave no impression of volume. Her face was small, though rather long, and her hair, which just covered the back of her neck, was a very glossy black. Her skin had a smooth, white pallor, and her eyes were narrow and cut rather long. Her looks gave one the impression that she looked like a girl in a male role in a girls’ high school theatrical piece, one of those androgynous girls, tall and thin, with long arms and legs and a beautiful pale face. Had she not been so beautiful, I would not remember her.
