밤이 깊어갔고, 트럭은 꼭 밤에 떠나야 한다고 했다. 여자는 내가 벌판을 걸어 집 앞에 도착했을 때보다 더욱 따뜻하게 나를 안아주었고, 내 손바닥 안에 자신의 긴 머리를 묶었던 오색실과 누구의 것인지 모를 이빨이 담긴 유리병을 선물로 주었다. 트럭이 달리는 동안 나는 여자가 내게 준 선물을 가슴에 꼭 안고 있었다. 나는 남자에게 고맙다는 인사를 하고 싶어서 핸들을 잡지 않은 남자의 한 손에 내 비밀의 징표인 마지막 디스켓을 쥐어주었다. 남자는 신기한 물건이라는 듯 훑어보고는 운전석 발밑에 아무렇게나 던져버렸다. 하지만 나는 비밀을 고백했다는 사실만으로도 마음이 편안해졌다. 얼마를 달렸을까. 남자는 혼자서 중얼거리고 있었다. 내가 본 여자 중에 당신이 제일 못생겼어요. 남자는 웃으면서 라디오 볼륨을 높였다. 그 어느 때보다도 깨끗한 전파 상태로 유행가가 흘러나왔고 남자는 침을 튀기며 노래를 따라 불렀다. 하늘 위의 흐린 별빛은 끈질기게 반짝거리고 있었다.

The night was deepening, and the man said the truck must leave at night. The woman gave me a hug, an even warmer one than that she had given me when I’d arrived. She placed in my palm several colorful strings, which she had used to tie her long hair, and a glass jar, which had an unknown person’s tooth in it. As the truck began to inch forward, I held those gifts tight in my arms.I wanted to thank the man, so I handed him the last diskette, the last sign of my secret. He looked at it as if it was something mysterious, then he tossed it onto the floor of the truck. But I felt relieved that I’d confessed my secret to someone. How far had we traveled? The man muttered something to himself. “You’re the ugliest woman I’ve ever seen.” The man smiled and then turned up the volume on the radio. A single clean wave of a popular song, cleaner than any I’d ever heard before, flowed out from the radio and the man began to sing along, spattering saliva all over as he sang. The stars were sparkled dimly and persistently in the sky.
