이제 우리는 가까이에선 서로 진실을 말할 나이가 지났는지도 모른다고 말입니다. 우린 진실이 얼마나 무서운 것인가를 깨달은 지 이미 오랩니다. 그것은 한편 목숨의 다른 이름일 겁니다. 그러니 이제는 아무 때나, 아무 곳에서나, 아무한테나 함부로 그것을 들이댈 수 없다는 것도 잘 알고 있습니다. 아니, 오히려 가까운 사이일수록 그것은 자주 위험한 무기로 둔갑할 수도 있다는 것을 여기 와서 알게 됐습니다. 이제 우리는 그것을 멀리서 얘기하되 가까이서 알아들을 수 있는 나이들이 된 것입니다. 그러고 난 다음에야 서로의 생에 대해 다만 구경꾼으로 남은들 무슨 원한이 있겠습니까. 마음 흐린 날 서로의 마당가를 기웃거리며 겨우 침향내를 맡을 수 있다면 그것만으로도 된 것이지요.

It’s been a long time since we discovered how scary truth is. In a way, truth is just another word for life, and therefore, we also know all too well that it’s not something that we can recklessly bring up whenever, wherever, or with whomever we like. Instead, what I learned from coming here was that the closer the relationship is, the more often it can turn into a dangerous weapon.
We’ve now reached the age where we can tell each other these things from afar, but understand them closely. Even if we remain only spectators of each other’s lives, what resentment can remain after all is said and done? On days when our hearts feel heavy, if we can go into our yards and catch the scent of aloes wood incense, then that is enough.
