오리떼는 끼룩끼룩 울면서 수녀원 상공을 날아갔다. 새들의 울음소리는 알아들을 수 없는 음향으로 조개무덤 너머의 시공을 건너왔다. 한 무리가 이륙하면 다른 무리가 뒤를 따랐다. 대개 스무 마리 정도로 대오를 갖추었지만, 너댓 마리의 비행대도 있었다. 늙은 수녀들이 입춘의 양지 쪽에 앉아서 돌아가는 새들을 바라보았다. 올 때의 무리와 갈 때의 무리가 같은 것인가 다른 것인가, 새들이 무리를 짓는 인연은 무엇인가. 새들도 친인척이 있고 벗이 있고 이웃이 있는지, 금년에 온 새들은 작년에 왔던 그 새들인지, 바이칼 호수는 얼마나 먼지를 늙은 수녀들은 서로에게 물어보았다. 새들이 하늘에 스며서 가물거릴 때 수녀들은 희미한 새떼를 향해 성호를 그었다.

They flew across the sky above the convent while honking. The birds’ honking traversed the time and space beyond the clamshell mound in an incomprehensible sound. After one flock took off, another one followed suit. A flock was usually made up of twenty or so birds in formation, but some flying corps consisted of four or five birds. The old nuns sat in the late winter sun and watched the birds that were going back. Were they the same birds that had arrived, or different ones? What kind of fate caused them to flock together? Did they have blood relations, pals, and neighbors? Were the birds that came this year the same ones from the year before? How far was Lake Baikal? The old nuns asked one another these questions. When the birds were flickering, having seeped into the sky, the nuns made a sign of the cross toward the faint flocks.
